I was talking about this with my friend the other day, and he was arguing that beating kids is wrong, and he thinks that it only makes the child live in fear and grow to hate their parents. I used to get beatings all the time when I was acting out, and I think overall, they served me well, and he's just crazy. He seemed completely unable to fathom the idea that a kid can get over the fact that they got spanked as a kid. Then I argued that I'd much rather have gotten a beating that lasted less than a minute, and had it over with then going a week with no TV or being grounded etc.

Also another benefit of the beating is that you soon out grow it, last beating I got was when I was 12 then when I turned 13 my dad told me I was too old for them and so just yelled a lot whenever I did something stupid.

So what do you think about them, for or against?

Edit: Also what was your worst beating/grounding. I actually can't really recall anything too terrible.

Exactly, also he seemed incapable to understand that parents who spank don't use it for everything. I remember once I made up a holiday and told my teachers about it at school and they had to call my dad in to come talk to the principal, I thought I'd get it bad, but instead he just explained to me that this was what happened when you lie, it just gets bigger and bigger until it's out of control, and since then I don't lie anymore.

Not even white lies.

I used to get smacked as a kid, and I look back and think that it did me some good.
As I'm really quite nice these days, especially to my parents.

I see kids that don't get hit these days and they turn out to be little shitbags.

So when/if I have kids, they'll be getting a smack if they go out of line.

Well I had an odd flashback I hadn't remembered before the other day from what must be about 10 years ago... where My parents had an argument because my mum thought my dad had hit me too hard. Dad went storming out and mum was making sure I was ok. They've divorced and stuff now... got me thinking.

But yeah. Hitting did kinda make sure I stayed inside the lines. But at the same time..it seems out of order to use physical violence on a child.

I was smacked with the wooden spoon, and had to eat soap whenever I said anything I shouldn't have. Did me good. A kids learns that he shouldn't bite alot quicker when he is clipped round the ear than he would if he was told to go to the naughty step.

I remember once my dad explained it to me, the reason you hit a kid is so they can let out all that energy they have. When they're yelling and screaming you hit them, they cry, letting off all that energy, and then they're calm again.

I got smacked as a child. I'm a pretty timid person now and I'm trying to decide whether or not the smacking had anything to do with it. Conclusion: it did not. It certainly made me reluctant to badly misbehave, though, which can only be a good thing. It's not like I was afraid of my parents, or anything. It was more the shame of it than anything, as they never really did it hard enough for it to actually hurt. If I did something bad enough to deserve a smack, though, I knew I'd really disappointed my parents and that was what dissuaded me from acting up.

Not that I can judge, but I think parents are far too reluctant to do it now because of how up in arms everyone seems to be about it and the implications.

I was never hit, my lad would have to do something pretty bad and be a lot older for me to hit him, but I wouldn't rule it out.

I just don't see that it's necessary, what could a kid (under 12 like Righty) do that would deserve a smack as opposed to a telling off?

I think if my lad was a teen and I caught him smoking or stealing or something I'd give him a swift uppercut, but I couldn't really imagine hitting a young child.

When you say 'hitting' as a method of child control, everyone seems to think that the parent hits the child. When I say effective spanking, I mean it has to be done it such as way that it works. Smacking a child, then immediately hugging him, saying sorry etc does nothing. Spanking a child with a plastic ruler once on the bare buttocks whilst explaining why you are doing it is alot more effective than some naughty step bollocks. The child associates doing something it is told as bad with the shame of being spanked and does not do it again. Simple.

Punching a child, or slapping with the hand is ineffective, and child abuse.

Indeed, I think that's a a misconception that a lot of people that have never been spanked have. They think it's abuse, but if the parent is responsible and doing it right they're not actually doing it very hard.

My dad never really spanked me but he would grab me by the hand to get me to stop moving then yell a bit. Mom on the other hand was with the wooden spoon.
