Exactly the people who are against hitting children seem to think that it is the only thing that a parent will use. When it's actually used in combination with telling them they did things wrong etc.

While I can happily see both sides of the argument and have no idea whether I'll do it or not, I got a smack on the botty if I did something majorly wrong and it's fine by me.

As has been mentioned, a fair few of you against smacking have personal reasons, which is fair enough. I do find it worrying when some of the people dead against it seem to think (as has also been mentioned) that we mean our parents smacked us willy nilly, or we're going to do the same. I'd never be smacked unless I was doing something pretty damn wrong and I needed putting in line quickly. There's a definite line between a bit of punishment (controlled and well executed) and just plain abuse. Kids don't really respond to reasoning or logic that well until they get a better understanding of the world, and sometimes it's one of the better solutions, not necessarily a last resort.

I do also happily acknowledge that people can turn out fine on either side of this argument, and it really is far more down to the parent's skills of parenting as a whole. If you get slapped around a lot by a parent who's a complete tool, of course that's not good. But then a parent that tries to get a child to stop doing things by talking them round but doesn't back it up well enough for the kid to care about the consequences is equally as useless.

Damn straight. I didn't get a hiding often when I was a kid, but when I did, I'd pretty clearly earned it.

Case in point. Once, I stuck a kids T-shirt in a hole in the ground and urinated on it. TO THIS DAY, I have no idea what I was thinking by this act... I can only assume it was a case of the bullied becoming the bullier... But I got a well deserved walloping when I got back to the house. Indeed, by that time I'd forgotten all about the deed.

It's not an act that I'm perversely proud of, and it's not a "shock" post. I'm not that kind of poster. But I do feel that sometimes physical pain IS justified.

 What did the kid do to you before for you to take his shirt and piss on it?
