Y'know, these 'community police officers' of whatever they're called. Round here they all seem to be overweight 5ft tall women, but I was curious as to what you guys thought of them.

Good thing to have? Useless? Do you respect and/or appreciate what they do? My local force are pushing for more people to volunteer, and I have to admit I'm considering it. What's your view on them?

I've seen quite a few very attractive female versions of these plastic plods wandering around here. I've not had to interact with them but as long as they disperse groups of unruly chavs then they're fine by me.

Their presence reassures me.

They already have a bad image, they're just people trying to make the UK a nicer place to live, even if it doesn't always work.

I'd go for it if it was my sort of thing.

They are gooseberry fool busybodies with no real power.

It's Labour trying to police on the cheap, rather than invest in new officers or reform the police service.

Do you mean special Constables or Community support officers? There is a huge difference. CSO's are paid and have limited power they patrol and offer a visible presence. Specials have the same powers as normal police but barely any training making them useless for anything bar anti social behaviour, They are volunteers and mainly work weekends for the excitement of pub brawls. Specials tend to have over inflated ego's and usually join for the power trip. (not like regular police at all ;) )

Load of pony. They are just cheap fun size versions of the the real thing. They should get proper coppers out on the beat and away from their desks doing paperwork!

Yesterday, two van loads of Police were in my neighbourhood giving out special pens to mark our goods with and explaining how doing so will make the items easy to trace if they are stolen. What a load of bollocks! Insurance covers all that, get them out there dealing with crime!

Community Support Officers are usually around when I'm out with friends, they just ask what we're up to and tell us not to hang around too much.

Nothing wrong with them, they're pretty friendly.

Thanks, someone with something half good to say.

I am a Police Community Support Officer. I took the job with an intention to see what policing was like and then go on and be a police officer. However 2yrs down the line i'm really enjoying the job and i'm really unsure about becoming a PC.

A PCSO is different from a police officer, we carry out a completely different job. We do jobs that a Community Beat officer used to do years ago. These jobs were no longer being done as there were not enough police officers to go around anymore for various reasons. So the govt invented PCSO's.

In my opinion the PCSO role should not exist, the role should be carried out by a PC, however this is a waste of resources. Would people want to pay a fully trained (2 yrs worth of training) police constable to walk around all day, talking to people, visiting victims of crime, offering advice, attending mountains of community meetings, visiting schools, tackling low level antisocial behaviour, kids bullying each other etc..

The force i work for has over 200 PCSO's. That's 200 extra police officers that would have to be hired to replace them, and that's 200 PC's that aren't out there solving crime, they wouldn't be using their powers at all as the job rarely requires any powers being used.

Yeah but my friends in the Police Force think that you're a bunch of banana splits ;)

Do they get truncheons? If so we should all join up and go all Rodney King on chavs.

You know, the same thing happened where I live.

What's the point, they could be out there stopping crimes from happening. :|

And how would they do that without some sort of extra-sensory perception? They best they can do is deal with it when it does happen.

Well, that was supposed to be sarcasm, but I sort of failed.

Having a proper police officer on the beat though would certainly stop alot of this anti-social behaviour from happening.
