Do not agree, let the competition be over the games, then devs will be forced to release AAA games and not give us half baked crap hd versions like they are doing right now.

The hardware might be expensive initially, but software will be cheaper imo.

I must admit I agree. I want to be able to play Geometry Wars, RezHD, PGR, Ferrari Challenge, Super StarDust HD and MGS4 using the same box. The software houses would certainly benefit from a single console future.

The fact is it's become apparent the neither Microsoft or Sony will want to ever work together even though, ironically, combining their specific strengths would probably increase the quality and variety of content as well as growing the market and make units cheaper.

You wouldn't see any competition in hardware terms though, allowing prices to stay fairly high and for innovations/new developments to just not show up at all. If only software houses benefit, we're strawberry floated from a hardware standpoint.

I don't think so. The rapid progressive nature of PC's would ensure that consoles stay ahead, or at least, with the technology curve. If they don't bother who's gonna buy them?

I mean in terms of Nintendo-grade leaps, popularisations of things that other companies would steer clear of. Nobody would take risks with the hardware of a one-console world, they'd play it safe every single time because there's only one machine, and because of that I really think we'd be missing out.

Indeed. There;s more to technology than how shiny your graphics are.

I'd be happy with just a small increase in graphics if they can really give games the AI and physics improvements they promised this gen. An F1 game with full damage and good AI would be something to behold even if it was only slightly better looking than what 360/PS3 can manage.

This. Though I really don't mind forking out a decent amount on hardware if it means nice shiny visuals. Stunning graphics seem to be really underrated around here.
