A few hours into this and it's... good I guess? It's a very beautiful game and the swinging is really fun, but other aspects of the core gameplay such as combat just feel competent right now rather than excelling and it's feeling like the epitome of "icon chaser" open world dullness so far.

Hoping it distinguishes itself as things progress further

The combat really opens up as you unlock more gadgets and moves.

I do think the combat is one of the weaker areas of the game though. Some aspects of it are fun, sneaking around enemy bases and using tools at your disposal but the close range combat is a worse version of Arkham's and needs more depth in my opinion.

For me, the webslinging and story is what made me love the game. It certainly.has open world icon chasing which I usually hate but because the traversal was so fun I just enjoyed the excuse to do it as much as possible. And it is a solid Spiderman story.

Personal preference, I guess. The Arkham games are some of my favourite games ever but I'd rate the combat in Spider-Man higher than Arkham's combat. I felt like Spider-Man was more fluid and free.

I'm still basically at chapter 0 story wise so if that kicks up a few gears then that will make a big difference I think

Took me a while to get into the story. It definitely picked up for me... at some point. (Cannot recall where.) But by the end of it I was a strawberry floating mess.

Put some more time into this over the weekend, the combat isn't terrible by any means it just feels like there is an extra level or two of quality and satisfaction missing from it.

Spidey is a bit of an enigma in terms of his control and movement as well, some impressive looking things feel effortless to pull off, bordering on too easy in fact, but then at other times just getting him to face the right enemy or crawl/walk where you want him to can be frustratingly hit and miss!

I am having fun swinging around the city taking pictures of things and collecting Peter's endless supply of backpacks though, the city-wide traversal is almost universally great. Just wish it was a bit more organic and had room for player exploration and discovery of things. Which to be fair it might do at some point - I don't know if there is other, non-mapped stuff that I could be finding but right now everything definitely seems to be driven by the map and icons

I mostly loved the game. The way I approached it was to clear all side stuff and collectibles, while messing around in the world intervening in random crimes until the only thing left was to then progress the story, then move on to other things that pop up.

The only major thing I think they missed out on, which can also be levelled at miles morales, is that there's little room for being spidey in the way of crawling around on walls and ceilings in a sneaky way. Most of the time you're only doing that to gain entry to a room, and then the focus is heavily on being on the ground fighting there rather than being upside down. You can do it, but it's never that interesting or geared up for it.

Yeah that's basically how I'm treating it now - I've gone around to all of the Oscorp police tower things to open the map, then taken on each thing that pops up in the area.

I quite like the random chatter you get on the phone from people and stuff like Jameson popping up with his latest rant whilst you swing around the city

Yeah, the world building is great and a definite plus for the game.

Also the way random people in the street sometimes react to Spidey is great as well, asking for selfies and things like that

I’m pretty much the opposite.

In the Arkham trilogy you can use button combos to pull off gadgets combos and you can pretty much string together many different moves on the snap. Spider-Man have none of this, only limited to the selected gadget that you have to select via a gadget wheel which is pretty clumsy compared to the combos you can pull off as Batman. Yes, the time flow slows down a bit when you are selecting a gadget but it somewhat miss the instant connection you see in Batman as some of Spider-Man’s gadgets doesn’t activate until a while.

So in short, Spider-Man’s a lot more simplistic.

I really think it comes down to personal preference. I just prefer Spider-Man because, to me, it feels more fluid and expressive whereas I think Batman feels more of a rigid game of "Simon Says".

Anyone else getting this on PC? It's £38 on cdkeys.com if you are!

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

It's really not worth it at that price. Wait until it's discounted.

It’s the best price around. I think it’s a great game but £40 on PC is a lot of money (having paid £60 for 2042 and preorder modern warfare).

There is a lot of game there for £40 but waiting till autumn might mean you get it for £20-30 if you have a backlog. I loved it.

I don't have much backlog for single player action games at the moment so it's perfect for me.

I'm really enjoying this! It's basically Assassin's Creed with a Spider-Man skin, but it's so polished, and the ray tracing effects are wonderful.

I'm gonna get it but not right now - got so many games to play already and I'm really hooked on Xenoblade 3.
