Exactly my thought, no real need for it.
On a different subject I also quite liked how the game turned out to be an origin story for both Miles' Spider-Man and Doc Ock.
Think I'm about 80% through now too at level 41. Just unlocked thevintage comic book suit and it looks amazing. I love how it just pops against the realistic scenery.
The mechanics of that Dr Octopus fight a top the tower were the worst of any boss fight in the game, just really clumsy to muddle through. Then the repetition of dodge punch on the side of the building was bizarre. Capped off by you not being able to control snatching the serum away from him in the final moment.
Also the black suit thing might have had an impact if you hadn’t been given the option to play in one for the bast 15 hours.
Overall I really enjoyed it. I think it’s a shame that beyond the first 5 hours it doesn’t really up its game much more and because of that I find some of the 10/10 scores a bit much but I suppose if being Spider-Man is just your jam gameplay wise then it doesn’t disappoint. Don’t get me wrong, I love the webswinging, enjoy the combat and stealth, found the story largely engaging it’s just the overall highs aren’t that unbeatably high for me.
My biggest disappointment is probably the characterisation of Peter Parker and Mary Jane though, not only were both their faces weird by I found them unappealingly bland as personalities. When he was Spider-Man I had no problem, really liked most of it actually, the interaction with Miles especially. I think I feel the same about Miles too, he seems a missed opportunity to have a different character to play off, I don’t know what he’s like in the comics but in this he’s just a young Peter. Side characters I think are pretty stellar across the board, May and the cast of villains all fantastic, Li is weird but the others great.
Finding Li meh carries over to my thoughts on him in the story too. Pretty much all of the Mr Negative stuff I didn’t care about and made little sense to me. I’d have much rather have seen more of the other villains in the game as we built up to Dr Octopus, who was the absolute highlight of the whole thing, than just focus on Mr Negative his dumb plan and weird cohort of bland minions. I think the world has been setup very well though and I’d love to see a sequel with some tweaks to aforementioned characters to make them more engaging.
I do have some qualms about that world you inhabit though. They do a great job of recreating New York but it ends up feeling weirdly plain as you spend so much time among the roofs where there’s very little distinct. I think there is quite a bit of detail at ground level but you’re never there to appreciate it so aside from tall buildings, smaller buildings, dirty building, park, the whole map ends up feeling rather samey. I’m not sure how you would remedy this other than giving you more to do at street level (not more of the sneaking stuff though).
Great job by all involved though about as good a first stab at the universe as you could reasonably expect and as long as some things are remedied for a sequel I’d love to dive back in to a future story. Not sure if I’ll go for 100% in this. I’m still having fun but I think it will gradually becoming tedious clearing those bases. It certainly seems doable though and maybe in the process I’ll see more of the map which might endear me to it more.
I completed this last night, what a great final act. I think objectively this game is a solid 8.5/10, and doesn't quite hit the top scores due to a lack of variety. However for any Spider-Man fan it's easily a 10/10, it really captures the feel of playing as Spider-Man, there are loads of nice little touches and Easter eggs and a really engrossing story.
Suit spoilers for the one you unlock at level 41 - the comic suit is fantastic! Really makes Spider-Man pop against the rest of the world and actually makes the world look even more realistic because of the contrast.
Ending spoilers - they really set up a lot of story for the sequel. There's Norman as Green Goblin, Harry as Venom and Miles as a new Spider-Man. Plus referenced but unused villains include Lizard, Mysterio, Sandman and Kraven.

I've been wondering how they'll handle Miles Spider-Man. At first I was thinking Peter would die early on but, having set up Harry as Venom, I don't think that's likely. Perhaps play will alternate between the two Spider-Mans(Men?) with Miles and Peter sharing shifts? Or maybe Peter will die at the end of the first act, killed by Venom?
Whatever happens, I'm so excited to see what happens next.
Just finished the story tonight, but still got loads of side bits to clear up which is good.
Absolutely loved every minute of it. Game of the Year for me so far and I can't wait for the DLC. It does upset me that we've probably got at least three years till the next one though.
Wedgie wrote:My only gripe at first is that the combat doesn’t seem as fluid as the Arkham series but somehow it’s a bit more easier.
It's because Batman would leap across the map if you targetted/attacked an enemy far away - like some hyperactive pinball
Spiderman doesn't - he mightmove a little bit of someone's close, but otherwise you have to move/position him (or bring people to you )
Finished it over the weekend (86% on after final mission up to 98% now).
Utterly glorious. Let down slightly by boss battles (that despite some amazing settings follow a similar dodge/throw/web then hit approach) throughout. Still fun, but mob fights were more exhilarating.
I thought the side missions were broadly poor. The research labs (for instance) offered a much better variety of activity. (The "find the students" one being a low light)
Spoilers up to end
Setting it 7 or 8 years into his career let them really jump into telling the story they wanted to.
Did they even hint at Otto in any pre-release stuff? I thought that was very well done - and the final fight (and reveals) suitably impactful as a result. I liked that other than Li/Otto the Six were taking on two a once. It helped overcome the "dodge focus" monotony by giving you 2 things to focus on. And fighting Electro/Vulture without touching the ground for about 5 minutes was fun!
I liked MJ and Miles in this (Although not their stealth sections )
Didn't see May dying come from. Was already to be snarky "she could go any minute? Oh but the cure will pull her back." and mock the sample size as curing her and making more...then they subverted my expectations. Didn't cry. Honest.
So we've got Angry Norman, Harry/Venom and Vengeful Otto for the future hints?
Need the sequel ASAP please! Very glad I've bought the pass though

I’ll post some more impressions tomorrow.
Go Spidey!
Finished.
I thought the story was pretty good and I liked the ending. It is setting up nicely for the sequel and there are many possibly of return enemies in the sequel, but there will be new villains too such as Green Goblin and Venom.
I also liked MJ and Miles as well and they are great characters. I thought MJ was a better character than the one in the films and the ending they should have put Stan Lee in as a cameo. It would be amazing cameo to end, but they did put him in earlier the game though.
It is almost everything I really enjoyed every bit and they have captured the world of Spiderman which was impressive.
