So the most recent leaks last night on reddit were pretty explosive. Disney backed out of Finn being the male lead, specifically steered clear of any Finn/Poe romance and also nixed a lot of the force ghost stuff, all it seems to appease China and the Chinese audience.

No wonder Boyega and Isaac seem to have gone off on one. It seems JJ Abrams had his version massively hacked about. Having said that, I'm not sure his cut of the film, as he intended, would have been significantly better. It sounds even more fan service to me. Although I think large parts of the movie would have made more sense.

I enjoyed it, I think the faux criticism is just playing to the gallery, it’s a good film, not amazing but good.

Disney can’t say one minute look how inclusive and progressive we are and then run away from it the next.

My only problem with a Finn/Poe romance would be that Poe is a lot older than Finn and that would make me a bit uncomfortable. Although less uncomfortable than the actual romance in the movie :dread:

I would have had absolutely no issues with Poe/Finn, but it really wasn't hinted at much in TFA and I feel they would only have shoehorned it in due to fan feedback wishing they were an item. In TFA, the direction seemed to be pointed at Finn/Rey so it wouldn't have made much sense.

However I do feel Disney likely made sure there was no interracial romance between Rey and Finn, and also stopped any Finn/Poe romance due to considerations for the Chinese market. They are only up for diversity when it is most convenient for the financials.

Its a real shame they steered so blandly on the romantic relationships in this trilogy. Both the OT and PT had pretty core romantic stories with Han and Leia and Anakin and Padme (even if that was really badly done).

Having said that, I still don't feel this was a "bad" film. It was OK, quite a good popcorn flick, but it added absolutely nothing to the Star Wars universe and is going to end up being seen as a largely supplementary trilogy or some kind of "multiverse" kind of thing by the fans. The fanbase seems split around EU loyalty and the Disney continuity.

This is how I feel about the trilogy from Disney as a whole. It doesn't bring anything interesting, meaningful or exciting to the franchise in any way. On top of that it makes zero sense. As I see it the trilogy simply exists only as a return on Disney's investment, nothing more. For me the Skywalker saga ends with RotJ.

In a wide-ranging interview, the [Dominic Monaghan] does not address conspiracy theories that prompted the hashtag #ReleaseTheJJCut, but he does note that filmmaker J.J. Abrams shot a lot of material not in the final version: "Oh, man, there was so much stuff!”
...

Resistance fighters and Stormtroopers danced to Beastie Boys’ “Intergalactic” during a scene reset.

#ReleaseTheBeastieCut

Here’s what we know about Project Luminous

Cavan Scott only shared that the project will happen in 2020, and it’s a new and exciting thing, the largest he has ever participated in. Instead of further comments, he used a Ben Kenobi-phrase from A New Hope: “The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things…”

It all matches with what our informant said about the secret project. Supposedly, Disney is also feeling that its current path with movies has flaws, and has, therefore, started designing a huge project years ago, which would result in making the future of the Star Wars franchise similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Our informant said that the new, connected multiplatform story will be set 300-400 years BEFORE the Skywalker-saga. The plot would involve a group of Jedi setting out to explore the then-unknown regions of the Galaxy (Timothy Zahn’s Outbound Flight might come into mind, which also deals with the Jedi exploring what lies outside the edges of the Galaxy). According to our informant, the Jedi would get involved in numerous adventures and conflicts with three different types of enemies, the darkest being ancient evils, Sith gods of some sort.

As far as we know, these stories would be separate, but also connected, similar to the MCU. The more one would see, the more it could be enjoyed, with the different plots culminating in the style of the Avengers movies. The main Jedi characters would also have different strengths and powers, similar to superheroes.

Although Project Luminous is said to be launched in 2020, our informant said that its first product will be a video game in 2021, but could provide no information about its content and its developers.

Yeah, I think my time with Disney's Star Wars is pretty much done.

I'm sure the younger generation will be thrilled by it though so that's good.

I don't know where to begin. So much daft shite that's JJ Abrams 101, and a lot of it just felt like him throwing his toys out of the pram and passive-aggressively undoing stuff from TLJ. Skimming through the thread and it seems like most of my complaints are basically the same as Parksey and Taf.

The kiss ffs  :fp: So predictable, like most of the movie.

I heard John Boyega had been tweeting weird stuff, just looked at his timeline and strawberry floating hell @ him just openly posting screenshots of spoilers not in any of the trailers. He doesn't give a strawberry float

Has Denster seen this yet?

EDIT: yes

Such mawkish fan service as well. Utterly disgraceful.

There's more to say but why bother. If I hadn't gone in pre warned - I'd have actually walked out on at least 4 occasions.

The cognitive dissonance of TLJ fans and the subsequent internet discussions has definitely been the most interesting thing about this saga

It's worked in giving the film the internet edge factor which will undoubtedly only increase it's popularity (on the internet) as time goes on.

Just realised that Rebels essentially introduced force time travel, so I wonder why they didn't try and write the emperor back in using that, instead of the "well, I survived because I'm really evil" thing they actually did :dread:

Like, if Kylo's still all "oh I love darth vader and want to be like him", surely the best person to raise him up to be the new darth vader would have been darth vader's teacher? Rather than have him start the movie and immediately want to hunt down and murder the guy?

Like... the more I think about this film, the less I like it.

Because that would be the worst bullshit.

An early cut of the film featured Palps' backstory, so it'll probably show up in the novelization. If it was shot, maybe it'll get into a future Director's Cut, but I wouldn't count on that.

Project Luminous might do something with it.

The 'leaks' on Reddit read like they could be from JJ himself. Everything makes him look amazing/good. Not buying.

I don't believe there is any "cut" of this which will make it a decent movie, there's elements that could fare better but it's got too many core problems to be saved by a different edit.

Saw this a few days ago, and have spent the time since catching up on the thread.

Thought the film was enjoyable, given that it basically embraced its [whatever the opposite of ambition is] right from the first line of the crawl. Within the boundaries of cinema that the movie set itself right from the outset, it's a pleasant enough ride that warrants one viewing. But if you give any thought whatsoever to its concepts one quickly realises that the film is an absolute trainwreck artistically and culturally, and it is so much poorer both in concept and execution than the film that preceded it.

Ignoring the inconsistencies and flaws and plotholes within the category of "space science" entirely (because all the SW films have these) and judging the movie solely on, well, merit... it has none. It's a childish, dickish thesis on why JJ Abrams was right by JJ Abrams, which is a pretty petty move considering this was never intended to be his film, let alone his trilogy.

Those that have commented so far in this thread that TLJ did as much "retconning" as TROS... what are you smoking? The Last Jedi took plot points from TFA and led them in unexpected directions, yes - but that isn't the same as reversing them. Whereas TROS is only about reversing the themes of TLJ, to an embarrassing extent:

TLJ: Let the past die.
TROS: Turns out the past was alive all along.

TLJ: Luke has learnt that failure is the strongest teacher.
TROS: Apart from bloodline force magic.

TLJ: Your parents were no-one.
TROS: And by no-one, we mean the children of the most infamous villain of all history.

TLJ: Here's a new, diverse character.
TROS: No.

TLJ: Here are some characters flirting with other characters of differing diversity.
TROS: I said NO.

TLJ: The force doesn't belong to the Jedi, it belongs to anyone.
TROS: As long as they're related to a significant character from the old movies.

TLJ: Kylo Ren killed his master; he's the Supreme Leader now.
TROS: No, here is his new master, who was master of his old master. Masters matter.

TROS: There are only ever two Sith.
TROS: And don't forget about the Knights of Ren.
TROS: Plus all the Sith that live on the secret giant Sith planet. Also it's a religion, language, culture and society too.
Old films: There can only ever be two: master, and apprentice.
TLJ: Wait, WTF?

TLJ: The heroes' cunning plan to save the day didn't work out... because that's what life is like sometimes.
TROS: Every single plan by the heroes' works out exactly as planned every time, because that's what my movies are like always.

TLJ: Sometimes, people are simply beyond redemption.
TROS: Hey look guys, Weasley was on our side all along!

TLJ: Everyone in this room is the last of the Resistance.
TROS: Plus JJ's mates.

TLJ: Here's Benicio del Toro.
TROS: Here's Charlie from Lost!

TLJ: We're not just going to make the film the loudest, worst "fans" want, because they already have that film and creating another would be entirely predictable.
TROS: Stay out of sight, Rose, the "fans" don't like you. Cash earned from pandering to toxicity is still cash!

TLJ: War might kill but it's endlessly profitable.
TROS: And there's nothing wrong with indulging awful concepts for profit!

Hime wrote:The cognitive dissonance of TLJ fans and the subsequent internet discussions has definitely been the most interesting thing about this saga

What I find interesting is throughout this thread you've insisted that TLJ is somehow the poorer film yet not given any reasoning? But despite its litany of flaws you defend TROS, which to any objective observer, is the very definition of cognitive dissonance.
