You know how I was annoyed we never got to hear the Emperor's threat that was the whole starting point for this film?

Turn out we did get to hear it (if you play Fortnite and logged on for their SW event and yes this gooseberry fool is canon according to Disney)

It's less him telling people who liked it why they're wrong, and more an interpretation of the trends it represents. It's not so much a review (as it says!) as it is an in-depth reflection of the thing in context.

How does Kylo come back to the light?

Leia kills herself and this sets him right. There's an implication that Rey saving his life, by transferring some of her essence to him, also affects him.

The scene where he turns is literally, like literally the same lines of dialogue, the same scene where he kills Solo but reversed.

You know what though. Reading all this and just having had coffee with my friend who has just seen it. I do need to see it for myself.
Just to see Leia once more on the big screen.



I'm similar to you. I thought they'd taken a risk with TLJ and theyd do something similar with the finale. It's so disappointing at what a missed opportunity this is.

As I'm now not posting on my phone in anger outside the cinema, my gripes:

Kylo is doing a cool looking fight, gets a terrys pyramint and magics to Palpatine
Palpatine is in it at all.
Palpatine looks like a pantomime spooky villain
Palpatine made snoke, and not figuratively, no he literally made him in a jar. Here is a big jar with two more snoke heads in to illustrate the point.
Palpatine has pulls a load of star destroyers out of the ground. Who the strawberry float made them? Did he have to advertise the contracts on monster.co.uk?

Kylo now has his helmet back for some reason.
Rey finds put about a guy who went missing. Oh look there's his ship just sitting on a rock.
The knights of ren do nothing.
Several times in the film, the villains are right with the good guys, and just watch them get away without intervening.
Rey and Ren can force pull a space ship, but Ren can't force pull the ship right in front of him while Rey walks away and escapes RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. AGAIN.
Poe gets given a magic poker chip which seconds later is just what he needs to magically gain access to a first order ship.

You can definitely see what Abrams wanted to do with TLJ:

Luke reluctantly helps Rey, agrees to come with her to train her and see Leia, who is on the run from the First Order.

En route, Luke drinks heavily, reveals his one unsolved case from 10 years ago that still haunts him - The Exogol Files.

They meet with Lando, who has a new possible lead, and a dashing new cape.

Together they all go to Lamb Pasaanda for a good curry and a drink. While there, Kylo and his Knights arrive and take Chewie. Luke gets wrecked on booze.

Toward the end of the movie, Rey and Luke solve the case. Movie ends with the Palpy lineage reveal.

Also at the end, what with everything having to be magically connected, when the leader of the deserters sat down with Lando, I genuinely thought it was gonna be revealed she's some long lost daughter of his. Was a weird moment regardless.

In the leaks, which were accurate apart from the bits they cut, Lando mentions losing his daughter to the First Order while they're all at Burning Man. Then at the end, the reveal was to be that Jannah was his daughter.

It'll be on the DVD no doubt.

It's probably the worst film in the franchise, and definitely the one most lacking in a clear purpose and coherence.

And when you consider that this is a frachise which features both The Phantom Meance and Attack of the Clones, that's saying something.

She's probably even more bemused than I am, given she's watched all 8 films, but had to research the Skywalker family tree half an hour before the movie starts. She also got some characters mixed up, inadvertently "spoiling" the movie for me beforehand by saying, "oh I read Anakin is in this movie too". Turns out she meant Kylo Ren, the second main character and one in all promotional materials.

Ryan Johnson must be having the best Christmas ever, first Knives Out is a critical hit and then a new star wars film comes out and it makes his film look like a masterpiece.

She's probably even more bemused than I am, given she's watched all 8 films, but had to research the Skywalker family tree half an hour before the movie starts. She also got some characters mixed up, inadvertently "spoiling" the movie for me beforehand by saying, "oh I read Anakin is in this movie too". Turns out she meant Kylo Ren, the second main character and one in all promotional materials.

I saw it with my wife who's a pretty big Star Wars fan but who was going in much more neutral minded than me, and had previously told me to shut up when I was mentioning the mixed reviews beforehand. She liked but didn't love TLJ and really likes TFA.

She hated it more than me, pulling off at least 3 real-life facepalms during the runtime, which I think is a new record.

Unless I've missed something - is it far to say reactions to this have been "Fun, but flawed" and "Worst thing ever"

What I can say is that “The Rise of Skywalker” is, to me, the most elegant, emotionally rounded, and gratifying “Star Wars” adventure since the glory days of “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back.” (I mean that, but given the last eight films, the bar isn’t that high.)
