Those damned sexist writers, no mother should ever do that for her SON

I imagine the rebuttal to that would be something like reducing complex female characters to tropes of mothers or objects of desire.

Was Leia ever really that complex as a character?

I don’t find any Star Wars character particularly deep or interesting, standouts from the saga probably being Yoda, Obi Wan and Poe. So no I don’t think Leia was ever a particularly complex or interesting character but I can sort of see how maybe if you thought she was, that her role in this being solely to sacrifice herself for Kylo Ren is reducing her character to a plain mother trope. If that is indeed what some people have taken issue with.

I think it’s a pretty ridiculous complaint though, because she died so they had to use what they had, being a parent is clearly an enormously powerful bond that motivates people to do all sorts of stuff. Her being a mother is not relied on as a crux to support her character or shown as being all she’s about and the weird sole bond parent relationship stuff has been a theme throughout the trilogy. But maybe I’m way off the mark.

There was some depth to Leia, but as Captain K says, that’s not much of a compliment as there’s little depth to many of the characters.

But she did well to avoid the “princess in distress” plot route that she started as. I’ve no idea if that was a decision Lucas made or if Fisher had any input.

By the end she had risen up to become a powerful general in a galaxy where there are very few female characters. She was a character in her own right and not just “Luke’s sister” or “Han’s missus”.

Her death wasn’t her being subservient to a man either. That’s a terrible read of the character.

Hi I'm PALPOS the crazy sith robot here to provide some hastily assembled bad guy for the film because the film needed one apparently, even though it had one in kylo ren. The cake force is a lie PMSL

Absolutely. Do you think that's an inherently bad idea? (also, it's hardly my opinion alone. It's a commonly held criticism of the film that it reduces every female character to a supportive/dependent role)

We actually pushed on through to the end and it just made me angrier then ever. Should have left it well enough alone.

EDIT: Now I knew to look for it, the final shot is so clearly a static picture of Rey with a floaty cloak. It's the dog from Ace Combat VII all over again!

strawberry floating hell. Every female character? Even the one who beat Palpatine? Zorii Bliss who turns up to save the man? Does this common criticism exist outside of Twitter threads or the awful Forbes review?

As for the "hurt hurr banter" and static final shot, it's amazing that you're able to overlook the mountain of shite in TLJ but these things you have issue with.

Is Zorii Bliss the one who had to keep repeatedly telling Poe that he can't kiss her? :dread:

Poe is the personification of TOXIC MASCULINITY. He doesn't respect the WOMAN with the long neck and purple hair, to the point she KILLS HERSELF.

The only Zorii Bliss quote on IMDB is:

Zorii Bliss : Why hello, sky trash!
Poe Dameron : Who said flying?
Zorii Bliss : Take a guess, spice runner.
Babu Frik : [pops up] HEY!
Poe Dameron : Zorii, you made it!

It’s like poetry.
