Apparently, 13 minutes of TRoS was cut between the cast viewing of the final cut and the film's release. Not sure how true that is.

So I’ve just got back from seeing it and on the whole it was alright? Certainly was expecting something more from the last film in the Skywalker Saga. On the whole an enjoyable film to watch (and I’ll be going to see it again once schools have gone back so the cinema will be a bit quieter) but I can say that out of the sequel trilogy that The Last Jedi is still my favourite out of the 3. Some quick thoughts below though,

- I thought it looked and sounded amazing, Williams score was just perfect. The lightsaber fights looked great, the space fights looked great, nothing bad to say about this really although at the end it did feel very Avengers Endgame where the resistance were like “Oh no, no one is coming”, turns around and there is a ton of ships there.

- Lightspeed jumping with the Falcon at the start felt like something ripped from the Avengers as well, can’t remember if its called portal jumping or what but that’s what it looked like they were aiming for in my opinion.

- Lando was superb, a couple of bits with Chewie had me almost tearing up, when he hears about Leia passing and then when he got given Han’s medal. Lando still smooth as at the end as well. Considering what they had to work with I think they did quite well with Leia as well, her death was done quite well.

- Rey was massively overpowered, obviously she’s the granddaughter of old Palpatine but still, everything she could just do on a whim, not really a fan of the force healing either, I guess it was kind of a callback to Darth Plagueis being able to heal others but not himself but then Ben/Kylo could just do it on a whim as well. Although Palpatine could heal himself which was something new.

- On the topic of Rey, I think her ending could have been done better. They could have either left her dead (again causing people to romanticise/deify the Jedi as Luke said in The Last Jedi, maybe for good this time?) or have her truly identify as no one when the woman asks at the end rather than calling herself a Skywalker. I also think they should have shown her building her own lightsaber, looks like it might have been created using parts of her staff and looks like it was a double bladed one as well, like Bastila’s in KOTOR) so that could have worked, showing her burying the Skywalker’s lightsabers (and the past/saga) and creating her own.

- I think I would have preferred it if Palpatine was a perfect clone of Palpatine rather than the one who got launched into the Death Star in RoTJ, and it was his spirit that survived rather than his actual body, unless I’m wrong and it is a clone?

- Horses on the Star Destroyer was daft.

- No idea why they pretty much cut Rose out of it.

As I said, I’ll probably be going to see it again in the next couple of weeks, at least now I’ve seen it I can divulge in some spoiler filled reviews

The hyperspace jumping was literally a giant advert for Disney’s Star Wars falcon ride.

Can anyone explain the point of hyperspace jumping in the film. Once the falcon had jumped to hyperspace shouldn’t it have a) been faster than the tie fighters and b) they should have been able to follow the falcon anyway. I thought the only reason the rebels were being tracked in the last jedi was because a tracking device had been installed or something. Can’t remember exactly.

Edit. Also something I expected was that Rey would end up with a double sided light sabre at some point given her skills with a staff.

Let’s face it though, the Star Wars series is so ridiculously overanalysed that’s it’s held to a different standard than every other film series out there

The Force Healing stuff has been there since the beginning. It's Luke's first interaction with Obi-Wan, when he's lying unconscious on the ground.

So...it looks an awful lot like the last shot of the movie is a hastily photoshopped Frankenstein.

Still looks better than Canto Blight.

Seriously though this level of analysis is ridiculous.

It absolutely is! But occasionally it yields genuinely interesting, non-"Look at this massive plot hole!" stuff like the above

The above is fascinating as it tells us the final shot we got clearly wasn't the intended final shot during filming, which makes you wonder what the original intended shot was and what led up to it. Also, where Rey's scene in Tatooine was in that original cut. It also hints towards the film being chopped and changed late into the process, which tends to be the result of a troubled production.

I don’t get what the anger is about there? Surely 90% of modern films are edited, digitally constructed or faked by green screened. Why is it so upsetting that a small scene of her looking into the distance was never actually filmed? Am I reading too much into this or are “haters gonna hate”?

No one's upset (maybe twitter weirdos), it's just interesting that the ending was changed.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Without that overview figure (like Feige) and with all the changes they made right up until the final few days - it's no wonder its ended up such a narrative mess.

A real shame.
They should have trusted in the strength of the two leads to carry the film and end it satisfactorily.

It still bothers me that there's plenty of good stuff there hinting at what could have been. Makes it so much worse.

This is a very good point. You need some mad bastard like Lucas or Feige to be the guy at the top who can give it the nod and keep it all fitting together.

Yeah. Supposedly Kennedy was doing that but she's done a piss poor job of it. She claims it was always her intention for Palpatine to return. So I'm happy to blame her. As well as the remake, lens flare hack of course.

I mean this is clearly, evidently bollocks. Even if it was true it'd mean they strawberry floated up even worse than we thought, by fudging said reveal as badly as they did.

Not really a fan of Star Wars, think at its very best it’s just pretty good.

Just seen this, thought it was the best of the new trilogy quite comfortably, there’s a lot of daft crap in it and clearly the whole trilogy has been badly mismanaged, but think that probably applies to most of the saga. It was a little longer than necessary but I’m not sure there’s much I would point to that I would definitely take out. Liked the little mission to wipe C3POs brain and the end battle in particular.

Overall ranking:

4, 5, 3/9, 6, 7, 1/8, 2

I hope Star Wars goes away for a good long while now.
