The movie opens with Kylo and Rey talking about their feelings. They decide that the only way for the galaxy to move forward is for the Sith and the Jedi to leave and find a new home in a new galaxy where the past can never be mentioned again. “Forget the past” says Kylo “We need to move forwards”. Before he leaves, Kylo finds out that he was adopted and that his real parents were nobodies. Kylo and Rey pick up broom kid and all other force sensitive people and they fly away on a long journey where they all discuss the pointlessness of the past. Crossing into a new galaxy, they can no longer feel the force. “Finally!” says Rey “the force is now gone and can be forgotten!”

They eventually land on a planet and bump into a private detective who refuses to speak to them, but just presses a key on a piano whenever they annoy him. Kylo and Rey decide that this is the perfect world for them to forget the past and they move forward by getting mundane jobs.

I'm sure there are better writers who could do a great job but I think this shows that whatever your feelings are towards TLJ the choices it made were perhaps not the most appropriate for the 8th film and penultimate of the saga.
