If I can be serious for a second, I do get what you're saying, it is quite hard to find a sportsperson who isn't aggressively focused on winning or being the best at their respective sport and a lot of them will come across as cold or stand-offish, but it is sports personality of the year after all. I'd like them to have a modicum of individuality and charisma at least, as opposed to just, y'know, swearing at cameramen who get underfoot:

I know that it's a deceptive name and that it's more about their achievements, I was mainly just being flippant about Wiggo because I personally don't like the guy. I think it would be tough to argue against him deserving an accolade but it is such a strong year. Any of Pendleton, Murray, Wiggins, McIlroy/Poulter as outside bets, David Weir or Mo Farrah could be in with a shot!

For what it's worth, yes Neil Lennon is a bit of a tool as a manager at the best of times(although I'd argue that he's massively improved his behaviour since his bust up with Ally McCoist) and certainly was as a footballer, I'm not blinded by loyalty enough to deny that!

But why not? And why is it that anyone who doesn't suggest Wiggins "doesn't understand sport"? :|

So being the first British male to reach the Wimbledon final in decades, winning Olympic gold and silver, and winning the US Open aren't classes as significant sporting achievements?

He lacks the Personality part.

So Murray's acheivements get a knock because the sport is middle class?

Can't we all just agree that JT should win this?

Well I'll assume that being British and male aren't achievements, just coincidences. But sure, in his field, they are significant achievements. I'd put them right up there with winning at rowing.

The same as Wiggins being the first British male to win the Tour de France then, yeah?

I think he's trying to imply that although Murray is British and a reasonably successful sports person (albeit in a sport that us British usually suck at), he's not much of a personality. In fact he's pretty much the opposite of a good sports personality.

Save the award for if and when he wins Wimbledon.

I get the impression you're not much of a tennis fan. I don't doubt that Wiggins' win was the result of an impressive amount of effort, but to claim that Murray's is "a less impressive achievement" is simply your opinion, given that tennis requires a phenomenal amount of skill and fitness, and the current standard of men's players is very high indeed.

Yes, in the sense that it has low participation rates and is not accessible to all.

Does competitive cycling not have the same issues? People riding to work doesn't count. I'm talking the proper expensive bikes and taking part in competitive events. Tennis is also on most school curriculums, I daresay Cycling is not.
