I hope that idiot realises you're laughing at him, rather than with him.

...utter drivel snipped...

I understand financial difficulties people may be in, but it's so lame to try and say that visuals don't matter.

Never did, never have, never will.

I was going to put a well reasoned response in here, but someone once told me don't argue with an idiot as they will drag you down to your level and beat you with experience.

Hmmm. I have time for both of them - Rik's always been a favourite of mine on these boards (mainly for his admirable taste in good-looking FPS's - a trait I happen to share with him, there) whilst MCN, of late, has been commenting in a ways I find hard to disagree with. His recent form has been pretty good.

I'd say they're both about equal in my humble opinion, although MCN is given to a slighter funnier turn of phrase of late, whilst Rik remains a solid contributor and, like MCN, a forumite I always look forward to reading - it's just a happy coincidence I almost always agree with his views, as much as they often irritate others.

Tell me more about this, so that i can even further (and retrospectively) justify my refusal to throw away a perfectly functional Sony WideScreen 31" TV.

Basically the next gen of LCD screens should reduce even further the problem of motion blur, so I may consider upgrading in a year if they do this.
My Panasonic 21" SDTV is now 11 years old but I get a great picture via RGB, only a few games I struggle to read text, it all depends on how good your SDTV copes with a RGB signal, some give a washed out display, others really bright and clear.

So I've got a year to convince the kids to ruin the TV downstairs then.

Was playing Metal Gear Solid 4 last night, ironically in my bedroom on a 21" Sony HD TV, and the subtitles on that are huge, crisp and clear, and would be visible on a 14" TV, yet put Gears of War 2 on the downstairs 32" Sony SD and I can't read them.

HD simply doesn't offer enough of an advantage for half of gamers to consider upgrading. However, it does offer enough advantage for the other half to get very very snooty about how much of a difference it bestows. Sounds like a perfect microcosm of human nature, to me.

Gears of War is designed by Epic, a company well known for pushing graphics over everything else. It probably didn't even occur to them that SD TV's even exist.

Yeah, even I can play and read the text on Dead Rising on my SD, and that is the worst I've seen this gen.
Having said all that I remember seeing Motorstorm playing on a huge plasma screen when it launched and thought how stunning it looked, mind you it was had a £1500 price tag.

Given sales figures I would assume half of gamers own a Wii or an older console instead of a HD console.

As Rik is so fond of pointing out, the advantages of the high-def consoles don't end at putting out a higher resolution image. There are other benefits, like better physics and AI - even the online system - which make it worth owning even without an HDTV or monitor.
