I'd imagine tht the demo was running on pretty high spec PCs, but the frame rate looked pretty choppy at times.

A hundred million dollars well spent. :toot:

Let's not forget that the game isn't finished yet. Which is probably why you can still pledge money on the web site. Clearly building space sims isn't like dusting crops. Or something.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

It's interesting watching that demo, because it seems to be more like what everyone wanted no man's sky to be, and seeing the flaws in star citizen's design highlights why this sort of scale just isn't possible.

Okay, so I greatly admire making the game one big engine for space flight, atmosphiric flight, on foot or other vehicle sections, and with no loading inbetween! The multiplayer aspect was key, and showing off how one player in the ship could monitor the progress of another on-foot player through the base really highlighted the strengths of the game. I loved the bit where the 'director' had the pilot look at the co-pilot, and seeing that exchange in real time from both perspectives. There is no trickery - this is a real 3D space, with players seamlessly transitioning from one environment to another. Has this been done before? The closest example I can think of (other than NMS) is Skyrim, where there are loading screens upon entering every house or cave. All very good.

However,
(Tbc - switching devices...)

The concern though is that this has now been in development for over 4 years, with over $110 million at its disposal and this is how far they are with it?

Don't get me wrong some of it from that demo looks awesome, its just how much longer will it take to really create a fully fledged game?

I've wanted a full space game for years and was excited when i first saw this but every year that passes drains any hope that we will see a truly awesome game

It seems quite clear to me that Star Citizen will never be finished, but on the bright side there's clearly some kind of thing being made that you can play and lots of mostly nice people are making a decent living out of it.

£110 million does seem like an awful lot of money for any video game. Just spending that amount of money seems like a massive undertaking.

It is indeed quite rough but I'm still keen to buy Squadron 42 and a ship for the multiplayer game. Hopefully it'll be more stable when the 3.0 version launches as my ship was wobbling around when it was supposed to be stationary on the launch pad.

Despite the inconsistent framerate and glitches, sitting in the cockpit felt incredible and it only got better as I floated around a small space station and gazed at a huge planet. The Gamescom demo will stay in my mind for a long while and I was excited at the idea that I could be experiencing that myself when 3.0 is released.

The game looks great, even on low settings, but I'll happily upgrade my PC for this as it looks like it could be a fantastic experience. I'm already planning to pick up a 1070 but I'll look at some i7 processors as my i5 is likely to hold back the game.

I'm excited! :toot:

For what they are promising it seems about right. Destiny cost around 140 million and both games seem to be about as ambitions as each other.

Funding is now nearing $200m, with cash flowing in at around $300k per day during a recent Star Citizen convention event. A new ship has been made available - the Valkyrie 2948 Liberator edition, available until 14th October, costs £264 - and an option to purchase a bundle with the ship and some extras, including "lifetime insurance", is £536.

The numbers around this game are incredible.

Surprised no-one's posted the recent trailer:

Graphical fidelity and star-strung cast aside, it's an awfully constructed piece of marketing. A trailer is supposed to entice, to tease and to market through the building of tension, be it narrative or visual, but all this does is showcase a handful of meaningless vignettes demoing impressively rendered celebrities being far too earnest. And it finished on 2 seconds of actual gameplay.

Each and every time this game rears its head the word 'SCAM' is written across it's face in larger and larger letters.

We will see in December how much of a scam it is, it is supposed to have a new roadmap. If that does not have a launch date, then I think the internet will explode

Has a cult like following - check.
Costs a lot of money to join in - check.
Costs a lot of money once you are in - check.
Has celebrity backing - check.
Has aliens - check.

It's starting to sound a lot like Scientology.

Forbes has just released a hit piece on the game:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/mattperez/ ... 6cf4435ac9

Rough playable modes—alphas, not betas—are used to raise hopes and illustrate work being done. And Roberts has enticed gamers with a steady stream of hype, including promising a vast, playable universe with “100 star systems.” But most of the money is gone, and the game is still far from finished. At the end of 2017, for example, Roberts was down to just $14 million in the bank. He has since raised more money. Those 100 star systems? He has not completed a single one. So far he has two mostly finished planets, nine moons and an asteroid.

This is not fraud—Roberts really is working on a game—but it is incompetence and mismanagement on a galactic scale. The heedless waste is fueled by easy money raised through crowdfunding, a Wild West territory nearly free of regulators and rules. Creatives are in charge here, not profit-driven bean counters or deadline-enforcing suits. Federal bureaucrats and state lawyers have intervened only in a few egregious situations where there was little effort to make good and a lot of the money was pocketed by the promoters. Many high-profile crowdfunded projects, like the Pebble smartwatch ($43.4 million raised) and the Ouya video game console ($8.6 million), have failed miserably.

The stuff about his wives is a bit nuts as well.

Also massive BUMP.
