Yeah that was yet another good episode.
They basically mashed Aliens and Alien 3 together and draped it in a Star Trek skin.
I'm really loving what they've done with the Gorn. Genuinely threatening and creepy, though it is now very strange that Kirk wasn't killed almost instantly when he had to fist-fight one of them in TOS.
Called that the other Cadet and Duke were going to die the second they were both introduced at the start of the episode. You don't suddenly introduce new characters, that we've never seen before, then take them on a dangerous away mission without that being obvious.
Gutted that Hemmer is gone. He was rapidly becoming one of the highlights of the show and it was great to have an Andorian as a regular character.
Less annoyed about La'an buggering off at the end. Partly because she was probably my least favourite character, partly because I'm sure she'll be back at some point in the future. It feels a little like they're moving people around so they can introduce some more TOS characters. Surely Scotty is gonna pop up at some point in season 2.
It's must suck not being a character who makes it to TOS. You're permanently an option for death.
Season finale next week and I'm gonna be gutted once it wraps up.
Whenever I like a character they die and Hemmer outside of Spock was my favourite character. I'm strawberry floating cursed lol
Absolutely amazing episode.
strawberry float that girl for not telling two sets of people someone was infected though, if she'd have said something either strawberry floating time nobody had to die

Well that was an absolutely brilliant finale to a wonderful series. Easily the best first season of Trek since series one of the original, and that had a few duds! Speaking of the original series, it may be best to watch "Balance of Terror" first before watching this. I strawberry floating love Pike as Captain, and knowing his future fills me with a mix of dread and melancholy. He deserves better! Anson Mount is superb. Superb stuff! Roll on season 2!

It's a return to form, yes.
For me it's arguably the strongest 1st season Star Trek has ever produced.
I agree. I'm watching on Paramount + and up to episode 4 but this has been a fantastic first season.
Having some of the characters already being featured on other series means they didn't have to worry about creating a backstory or getting people used to them so they just got on with great storytelling. This series shows that the episodic format is still the best way to go with Trek unless you have some really great content like DS9.

Running a little behind, just watched this last night. Agreed! It was heavy on Alien with a little bit of Predator and The Thing. 1 to go, will miss it too

1hr 2m long! A nice twist on "Balance of Terror" from TOS. There was so many shots and pieces of dialogue lifted and reworked from that episode, but it really worked. Even the music in places. Wonderful. Guy playing Kirk took a wee bit to grow on me, but I like that he's not doing a Shatner impression. "Scotty" appearing in voice only was a nice touch. I loved the idea that Pike trying a more diplomatic approach here was absolutely the wrong move to make. That sometimes you need a Kirk to just kick someones arse from time to time. I forgot about Una's gene-modification past so was convinced her "deception" was going to be that she was a Klingon agent or something. That's three of the recent Trek shows who's seasons have ended with a character being arrested at the very end. (Captain Freeman in Lower Decks, Book in Discovery and Una here) I wish Picard had ended with the writers being arrested.
Season thoughts...
I like that they've not been afraid to move characters about. Yeah Hemmer dying just as he was getting stuff to do sucks, but it was a good moment. La'an is almost certainly going to be back next season, but it was nice to see her going off to do her thing after the Gorn/Alien episode.
I know I've said this a few times before but I stand by it. This is arguably the strongest season one Star Trek has ever managed. It's not been perfect, but I've only got very minor nit-picks, that aren't even worth bringing up.

Would agree with overall season thoughts.

I like that they didn’t push Kirk is ‘better’ than Pile (or vice versa). Just different. A Kirk was needed here (because only the 2nd in Command on Ronulsn ship) not a Pike.
I didn’t like they skirted around Spock being ‘important’. Pike making the choice purely for friendship/loyalty would have been enough - although you can still read it that if you want .
Stunning to think this is coming at the same time as Picard/Discovery and from the same "people"
That was quite possibly my favourite episode in the series. Absolutely loved every second of that.
I still feel
There would be a way for Pike to stay alive and also protect the timeline, but maybe that will come up later, or maybe they'll just fill as many stories as possible in the 7 year period before he eventually dies when they decide to end the series
Has a second season been confirmed? If so, consider me really strawberry floating happy.

If anything it lays bare just how disappointing the first two new live action shows have been.
Discovery I've always at least gotten some enjoyment from, even if it's a deeply flawed show in a lot of ways. But it's found it's level and while I can't see it ever getting much better, as long as it doesn't get worse I'm going to keep watching it. Picard season one, was the same, where I more or less enjoyed it even with it's issues. But season two is almost certainly the worst Star Trek I've ever seen. I'll watch season three, just to see them wrap it all up, but it's going to be out of spite at this point.
Which is why it's been so refreshing to go from the utter depths Picard sank to, all the way to the heights that Strange New Worlds has maintained from the start. During the finale I even caught myself thinking how happy it made me to have live action Trek that was actually, genuinely good again. They've rekindled my faith in the live action shows with this one and if it can maintain this level of quality I'm going to be very happy.
I just wish we had 24/25 episode long seasons for it, but that's not how modern shows work unfortunately.
So the Klingons are going to show up at some point, as are Angel and Sybok (Which isn't really a surprise I guess) and we're going to see more background on Ortegas. Glad to hear that as she was probably the character who got the least development in season one and I want to see more of her.
