Outside of a couple of bits the crate stuff is very much optional, can get extra stim packs for doing bits in the overworld which is always good. Overall I enjoyed this game though, not enough to go back and hoover up all the extra content but the main story was good enough, it felt very Star Wars which is again good  it feels amazing when you nail a section of the combat to feel properly like a Jedi Knight too. Graphics are amazing, sounds good enough too. I really should load it up since the update for the next gen consoles to see how it looks now.

Not the best Star Wars game anyone has made but it’s the first Star Wars game I’ve played since EA got the rights to the game licence so it’s got that going for it at least?

Valhalla does those annoying loading screens too :capnscotty: Not quite as often as this but still there!

I do think there is a lot of potential there. I'm optimistic for a next gen sequel.

Spent some more time on this last night and I'm kind of getting into it a bit more! I still think all of the flaws and weaknesses I've mentioned are present and it hasn't really done anything to reduce their impact but I think I've just come to accept it for what it is and lean into the positives where I find them!

Unlocking a few more upgrades and the "push" force power has made things more interesting for sure

I'm not sure they really needed "puzzle" type sections in this, whilst it was kind of interesting throwing my big balls around the Zeffo temple it doesn't really feel like it fits with the rest of the game.

Also needing to use specific things like the balls or plants to break through walls when I've got perfectly good force powers and a massive lightsaber which should be more than capable of doing the job is a bit annoying from a "suspension of disbelief" perspective.

That sort of thing always bothers me in games, particularly in games like tomb raider where a contraption exists with the sole means of progressing being destruction of an entire room. How did they test it?

Well, that's that underground palace finished after 18 years of construction. Now to finish the door. I'll just put this massive battering ram attached to a water wheel, targeting the structural support.

What? Why not just use a key?

No, we'll flood this room, turn the wheel and then collapse this entire cave to get back in.

Yeah it's ridiculous if you bother to spend 5 seconds thinking about it and it's usually made even worse by the fact you go through these ridiculous steps to get somewhere which seems only accessible by totalling a building or something and then when you get there a bunch of random baddies are waiting for you - how the hell did you guys get here then?!

Put some more time into this last night, one thing I will say it has going for it is the visuals - it's often a very nice looking game! Performance is excellent too, locked 60FPS throughout with everything on max - only slight annoyance is that very occasionally there is some stutter which I'm assuming is down to loading in some way.

One of the biggest issues right now is the lack of satisfying progression. Nothing in the upgrade path for skills or combat really feels like it makes much difference to the game at the moment. It also fails on one of the key Metroidvania pillars - making your growing skillset feel like it is organically opening up the play space - getting a new tool or power up should feel like it empowers your movement options and exploration in a tangible way, but here a lot of the time it just feels like finding a key card to open the next set of doors which is a real shame.

Overall I think I'll come out of the back of this thinking it was fine but nothing special, but right now it's an enjoyable enough way to pass the time and getting it on Game Pass was a win because I think I would have been more let down if I'd dropped a significant sum on it!

I agree with all that. Also, playing Control after made me realise how unsatisfying the force powers felt at times.

I don't think it's a bad game, and I hope they make a sequel (think they've hinted they are) because the foundations are definitely there to build on.

I was wondering how you were getting on, good timing. Have they given it a next-gen update now? When I played, I'm sure it was still 30FPS.

I'm on PC :datass:

I thought I had seen something about a next-gen upgrade though, not sure if it has happened yet

The update has been rolled out (can’t remember when), but on the Series X it doesn’t seem like a full X/S upgrade as its still classified in your games list as a One X game. I’ve not actually loaded it up since it was updated, keep meaning to see how it looks on my new TV as I played through all of this on my last one before it was replaced.

Getting pretty tired of the puzzle sections in this now. They aren't particularly interesting or well designed and the mechanics of the game aren't refined enough to make it feel really satisfying. It seems like they were going for a cross between Tomb Raider and a Breath of the Wild shrine type thing, but it doesn't really come together.

And I swear if I find another strawberry floating poncho in a chest I'm going to murder someone. How they thought this was a satisfying reward for finding chests I'll never know!

Don't forget you make hundreds of changes to your lightsaber which you won't be able to see at all when playing the game!

This was the stupidest part of the game for me.

Yay!

For years fans wondered how Luke had manged to make a new lightsaber after losing his first one in Empire. Did he have to go on a deep Jedi quest to learn how to become one with the force to build it? Did he have to fight off scrappers, bounty hunters and giant beasts in the darkest recesses of the galaxy to hunt down the complex components required for its construction?!?! Nah m8, just picked the gooseberry fool up from some boxes that were lying around - turns out this stuff is strawberry floating everywhere.

I always though all of the ponchos looked terrible as well! In fact I think most of the customisations, apart form maybe the colour of the ship (which you barely see), were worse than the original ones you start off with

I liked being able to dress him in a poncho and hat that looked like the ROTJ forest gear, but apart from thast they were useless.

Yeah, I mean it doesn't help that Cal is one of the most generic looking protagonists ever - he's like the guy you start with after a random roll in a game with a character creator, not something that an artist actually sat down and designed!

Also why on earth did they decide that when your droid (I refuse to remember his name) slices open a crate he doesn't then automatically loot it? "Thanks for unlocking that crate GP-1! No don't open it now, we'll come back for the poncho later!"

Just finished this and thought it was pretty good, although not great.

I wasn't a big fan of all the back-tracking. Yes, it was cool that I got a power that could open up a new area, but it felt like such a slog going back through the fairly long sections I'd already played. It was the same having to head back to the ship after completing your objective on a planet. I felt similar about the combat as the game overall, pretty good, although missing something that made it great. Loved deflecting blaster beams with the lightsaber, and for the standard enemies I loved the blocking and countering too, but for any kind of boss enemy I just felt the parrying/blocking wasn't working at all, and I descended into button mashing.

I wish there had been a bit more of the platforming element, as that all felt really good to me. It was only a thing when they'd very specifically set it up, but jumping through the air and force pulling a rope into your hand didn't feel like it would ever get old.

I imagine they're very limited in the pre-existing characters and locations they can use, but I think a few more cameos from familiar characters would have been nice. It sounds like it sold well enough to make a sequel inevitable, and I really hope they jump forward the original trilogy period. Could potentially be interesting to be playing a story that crosses over with that one, in that you could end up in places just before or just after an event we saw in the films.
