Cross play as well. :D

That’s great it has cross play, it’s one of the few things I hope becomes the norm over the next generation.

Now that you mention it, I think this is a downside that potentially could dour my excitement. As much as I enjoyed Starfighter Assault in BFII, the Hero Starfighters alternative just felt so empty and kinda boring. Surely there will be a dozen or so AI ships involved as well?

5 v 5 seems like a console enforced limitation. Hopefully you can have higher numbers on the pc, even if it means ditching cross play for it.

About Star Wars: Squadrons PC
Master the art of starfighter combat in the authentic piloting experience Star Wars™: Squadrons. Buckle up and feel the adrenaline of first-person multiplayer space dogfights alongside your squadron. Pilots who enlist will step into the cockpits of starfighters from both the New Republic and Imperial fleets and fight in strategic 5 vs. 5 space battles. Modify your starfighter and adjust the composition of your squadron to suit varying playstyles and crush the opposition. Pilots will triumph as a team and complete tactical objectives across known and never-before-seen battlefields, including the gas giant of Yavin Prime and the shattered moon of Galitan.
Take control of starfighters such as the X-wing and TIE fighter. Customize loadouts and cosmetics, divert power between weapons, shields, and engines, while immersing yourself in the cockpit. In addition, players will have the option to play the entirety of the game in virtual reality (VR) on PC!
Learn what it means to be a pilot in a thrilling Star Wars single-player story set after the events of Return of the Jedi. Seen from alternating perspectives between two factions, iconic and emerging leaders on both sides are battling for the galaxy. The New Republic fights for freedom. The Empire demands order. We need you to join the galaxy’s finest.
All Wings Report In – Plan skirmishes with your squadron in the briefing room before taking off to the evolving battlefields across the galaxy. Compete in intense 5 vs. 5 multiplayer dogfights or unite with your squadron to tip the scales in monumental fleet battles. Together, you’re the galaxy’s finest.
Master Legendary Starfighters – Take control of different classes of starfighters from both the New Republic and Imperial fleets – including the agile A-wing and the devastating TIE bomber. Modify your ship, divert the power between its systems, and destroy your opponents in strategic space dogfights.
Live Your Star Wars Pilot Fantasy – The cockpit is your home. Use its dashboards to your advantage and – with just a thin hull of metal and glass between you and the perils of space – feel the intensity of combat from a first-person perspective. Take off in thrilling multiplayer modes and a unique single-player Star Wars story, which covers a key campaign near the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. Immerse yourself in the pilot’s seat completely with the option to play the entirety of Star Wars: Squadrons in VR.
The Mission is Clear – Star Wars: Squadrons is a fully self-contained experience from day one, where you earn rewards through play. Climb the ranks and unlock new components like weapons, hulls, engines, shields, and cosmetic items in a clear path for progression that keeps gameplay fresh and engaging.

Remaining sceptical about this, given we haven't seen any gameplay (rather than game engine) footage. I want it to be great, but I suspect it will be a multiplayer-focused microtransaction fest.

Primarily a MP game with a very short campaign. Thanks, but no. Might pick it up if I ever get VR just to see what that's like. (I'm gonna go with pretty amazing.)

Unless this game develops starfighter combat in meaningful ways beyond Battlefront II, it'll probably get stale quite quickly for those not playing with VR. BF2 dogfights, especially in the 4v4 Hero Starfighters mode, typically devolve into turning circle contests.

It's better when everyone has objectives beyond "kill the enemies" - BF2 fell down by making it so one side had to destroy targets and the other was playing defense. Both sides should have non-starfighter objectives.

There's often too little incentive to engage in the kinds of longer chase battles we see in the movies, and larger, bulkier ships like the Falcon, or the TIE Bomber, are easy prey to A-Wings. Meanwhile, Y-Wings, with their mounted Ion Guns, just carve through Imperial fighters like a knife through butter.

It could be a pretty good experience nonetheless though, if they bring every conceivable fighter to bear, including the B-Wing, TIE Defender, etc.

A game like this could use player-controlled light cruisers, acting as the equivalent of vehicles in an infantry-based game. Both factions have them in abundance, and they could house additional players, manning the pilot's seat and defensive turrets, or even in docked fighters, laying in wait for the ideal opportunity to disengage and outflank the enemy.

Speaking of, fighters being able to attach to asteroids and debris like in the movies and shows would make an interesting gameplay addition, too, allowing the setting up of ambushes or escape from pursuers, or repairs.

Unlockables that aren't just cosmetic = unbalanced multiplayer

Was a big problem with the new Battlefront II, and sounds like it will be a problem here too

I'm out. BF2 was impenetrable for a late adopter because of this exact reason.

I don't play many games like thst for the very reason that I'm it going to be spending all day gittung gud, so the longer you leave it to play, the tougher it is. Maybe they could implement a beginners only matchup and so on.

The fact it doesn't seem to be a full-price game is quite telling.

I dunno, I get creamed by newbies regularly in BF2, despite having all the good stuff equipped. :shifty:
