Anyone know where I can pick up a Thrustmaster HOTAS controller from? Can’t seem to find them in stock anywhere!

I think you should still be able to add it to the trolley for delivery though, dude?

Just in case there was any doubt, don’t go hoping for any new content:

In an interview with UploadVR, creative director Ian Frazier confirmed the team is not treating Squadrons as a live service. "We don't want to say 'it's almost done!' and then dribble out more of it over time, which to be honest is how most games work these days," he added. "So we've tried to treat it in kind of an old-school approach saying, 'you've paid the $40, this is the game and it's entirely self-contained. We're not planning to add more content, this is the game, and we hope you understand the value proposition.'"

Yeah, saw that this morning. Super disappointing. I've been playing this all day and it really is an excellent experience: both modes are super fun and the flight model is just amazing. Seems a shame that something like this won't be getting supported in the same way Battlefront has been, considering the latter's much weaker central gameplay mechanics.

Wasn’t really feeling this in the end so got a sub-two hour refund. This news only puts me at ease that I probably made the right choice unfortunately.

I assume that EA very specifically let them make this as an experiment to see how well it was received. They will have had a very fixed budget for it and it will have explicitly been a release then move on title.

My guess is that we will see a follow-up announced by E3 next year (assuming there is one) that will be a fully supported "service" game with updates and new content released regularly.

It wouldn’t surprise me if it was deliberate. “You don’t like microtransactions or games as a service? Fine. This is what you get.”

Tell you what, I'd strawberry floating kill for a Battlefront scale version. Full scale, 20v20 or more maps, dynamic events like reinforcements if you're winning or stations etc blowing up if you're losing, more fighters (a heavy class with B-Wings and TIE Advanced/Defenders maybe!) and perhaps command options for the capitol ships.

God, imagine.

Dang, that's a shame! Ah well, hope you are able to pilot an X-Wing soon.

I have this now. I'm afraid to try it. I don't have a HOTASS or whatever the thing is, is it okay to play on a regular controller or the ball wands?

Normal controllers make up the vast majority of players I would think, so you'll be fine. HOTAS is far from essential, but really adds to the immersion, especially in VR.

Been playing a bit of this and it's a decent little title, yeah the content is pretty light but for a budget title it isn't that bad. My guess this is testing the waters for a full fat title probably next year for next gen.

Just posted a fleet battle with a guy called BillCosbyFan.

Think I killed him about 12 times.

Been dipping my toes into the singleplayer, and enjoying it. I'm only a couple of missions in. Don't feel ready for multiplayer yet.

THOUGHTS

  • Balancing the energy needs of the fighters is a challenge I am enjoying.
  • Getting to look around during combat is cool as heck - locating targets I wouldn't normally be able to see, and orienting myself to get them, watching my wingmates, just admiring the cockpit, etc. Also, hello R2!
  • The binaural audio is incredible and puts you in the cockpit every bit as much as the visuals.
  • The briefings are really cool in VR, and feel like you're a part of something. I caught myself several times nodding and gesturing and wanting to reply to NPC speakers. That was weird, in a good way.

BUT ALSO

  • Dogfight maneuvering can become very disorienting - I try not to roll every much as a result.
  • I generally begin to feel slightly unwell after one mission, and the feeling only grows. I haven't tried to do more than two missions consecutively, but given the lasting feeling of uneasiness that persists after taking off the headset, I don't think I should.

IN CONCLUSION

  • I'm having a lot of fun so far, in fact I don't know that I'll ever be able to play another Star Wars fighter game outside VR now ('mon sequel & BF3!), but it's cautious fun that I can't really do for very long before motion sickness begins to set in.

Still though, the devs have done a great job, and I would love to see Squadrons grow to become a sister franchise to Battlefront.

Managed to get Squadrons working with my Index yesterday, though was a bit fiddly. Toggling the VR didn't initially change the audio output to the VR headset, but did when I managed to press Escape on the keyboard. Just on starting the first mission though the game crashed, but the headset was still displaying output, though when I turned my head it moved the entire environment in the opposite direction to where I was moving.

After managing to force close and restart the game it did work, though on exiting Steam VR throws an error message about losing the application (presumably me using the Original version doesn't 100% play nice with Steam VR).

Playing it was definitely enjoyable though. The X-Wing cockpit is way better than the Tie one for VR though. The Tie fighter cockpit has an incredibly limited view that just kind of reduces the spectacle of it all, whilst the X-Wing cockpit gives you a much better view of your surroundings and makes the VR setup much more impressive.

Just a shame that it doesn't support using VR controllers to play with all the buttons and switches in the cockpit.

I'm proper rubbish at this (Ranked Maverick after 10 matches)

Ywing/Bomber with multilock missles and mines is amazing though.
