- As of the end of Episode VI, Luke is the last Jedi. Peace has returned to the galaxy.
- In order to maintain balance and fight against possible remnants of the Empire, Luke is encouraged to discover the secrets of the Jedi in order to learn as much as he possibly can, become a master, and educate a new generation. He discovers many secret places in the galaxy.
- However as he's a hero and a legend and a young man it seems fair to suggest that in the thirty years between E6 & E7, antics occur. Luke, not fully versed in Jedi code, unknowingly breaches it and he and his (unknown) lady give us Rey, a younger cousin for Ben Solo. All is well.
- Luke then finds the First Jedi Temple, and learns of the Jedi code. He is mortified to learn that he has broken it and followed in the footsteps of his father. He regrets his transgressions and fears destiny is toying with him, pushing him down the same path as Vader. However he vows to serve the light and commences training a new generation of Jedi.
- Although Han is not strong with the force and Leia is nowhere near as strong as her father or brother, their son shows an incredible aptitude for it. Without someone similarly strong in the force to guide him, however, he becomes interested in powers that are not suitable for a Jedi, and seeks out this knowledge for himself. Han and Leia grow concerned.
- Luke's Jedi padawans become stronger with the force. But as always, the force balances, and this notable increase in the power of the light leads to an awakening in the Dark Side. This somehow results in Snoke and his killing of Luke's woman. Horrified and heartbroken, Luke no longer trusts himself not to repeat his father's mistakes. He leaves Rey on Jakku, far away from the force, asking Lor San Tekka to watch over her, as Obi Wan watched over he.
- Leia and Han are horrified at Luke's decision, but Leia discovers Rey's whereabouts and receives assurances from Lor San Tekka that she is safe. Rey grows up on Jakku, without knowing or remembering her family.
- Luke distances himself from them entirely and devotes his life to the training of the next generation of Jedi. Han and Leia ask Luke to train Ben. They fear that without a Jedi to show him the right ways of the force, he will succumb to the dark side. Luke is reluctant, and not sure that he trusts himself to guide the boy, but feeling guilt for having left Rey behind, agrees to do it. Ben, however, has begun his training far later than the other padawans. Ben is told that his cousin died with her mother during the attack by Snoke.
- During his years of training, Ben asks his uncle many times about Anakin and his powers. Luke condemns his father and encourages Ben to focus on the light and to try to ignore the powers of the dark side. Han and Leia grow apart.
- However, Snoke manages to find Skywalker and tells Ben that he has been lied to, and his cousin is alive and well. Ben, furious, is manipulated by Snoke and has his revenge on Luke. The padawans flee or are killed. Luke, despondant, goes into hiding. Wounded by the news of his son, Han also flees.
- During the years of Luke's absence, Snoke and Ben (now Ren) search for his whereabouts. But so too does Leia, confident that if she can find her brother and convince him to forgive himself, he can turn Ben back from the dark side and defeat Snoke's new First Order.
