Even though it was just a tease I’m excited for this. I watched the trailer on YouTube and it looked much crisper than the livestream and before reading the Telegraph article I was pausing it to see if I could learn anything, not too much, beside chart and guidebook. Interview suggests first contact hasn’t happened yet. The music accentuates the hopeful theme. I have registered with the Constellation!

Just another micro-transaction loaded multiplayer shooter to add to Microsoft’s loss-making Game Pass, and it doesn’t look next gen at all which is a shame.

We can’t really judge this until they actually show the game, which probably won’t be until next e3. It will be dlc heavy for sure. Bethesda haven’t released a AAA game for over a decade, so I wouldn’t expect this to be at that level.

They haven't released a AAA single player RPG in literally a decade, correct.

You predicted this was multiplatform - another 'prediction' you got wrong.

Now to wait for MS to bow out of the industry completely....

I absolutely do not agree with whatever agenda the Sony fanboy above is pushing, but my expectations for this are severely reduced, given both the glut of space based RPGs recently and Bethesda Game Studios' recent output.

Fallout 4 was a damp squib, and 76 doesn't even bear mentioning. When you've got games like No Man's Sky covering the exploration side of things, and Outer Worlds/Wilds on the RPG/storytelling side of things, Starfield is going to have to be something truly, truly special to stand out. And honestly, I don't think Bethesda have that kind of game in them anymore given they've essentially been remaking Morrowind for 20 years now.

Horses for courses, I mean Skyrim and Fallout4 are massive both in sales and critical reception....literally the last 2 single player RPG's they made. If it's not your bag that's fine, but if you don't like those games, which you don't, why where you interested in this if at all?

Let's be honest here- even if it does meet that release date it's going to be borderline broken on launch.

I expect this will have base building in it. At which point I have to sadly inform Bethesda that actually I'm just really into the post-apocalyptic aesthetic so have no real desire to spend days building a house outside of Fallout...

I'd definitely buy an actual remake of Morrowind, if they did it properly.

Expecting Cyberpunk levels of disappointment with this.

I don't think it needs a remake. I was more trying to say they have measurably strayed from the Morrowind formula and the game design is worse for it!

Oh no I got your point, and I agree - each game since has been watered down in increasing measure sadly.

Hence why I would actually prefer a genuine Morrowind remake!

Agreed. Honestly, Skyrim was the start of the rot imo. There wasn't a single interesting character or storyline, with even the old reliables like the Brotherhood quests being dull as f.

Fallout 3 was the last game they made that was genuinely excellent I think

Oblivion had plenty simplified back from Morrowind, Skyrim just took it further.

I know you won't agree with me but at least F76 is something different, not just the same kind of game but worse. The main redeeming factor of Fallout 4 for me was the base building because it was a new system for that game, rather than being comparatively worse to Fallout 3's version. But as RPGs their games have definitely been in decline. Undoubtedly though the simplified systems have helped make them more accessible.

I own a series x, but still hope microsoft don’t dominate as they did with windows. It will end the industry.

Starfield E3 2021 reveal exclusive: How Todd Howard spent 25 years creating his 'NASA-punk' space RPG

Pen-and-paper RPGs, around the world explorers, and Elon Musk have all played in a role in shaping in 2022's most anticipated game

So, Todd Howard, what do you do in the game?

“Well it's coming out next year so there'll be a lot of time to show actual gameplay – and we'll do that closer to release, like we usually do,” he explains with impeccably practiced patience. “But I will say this: it is a first person and third person game, like our other ones. We like that style of gameplay. First person for us is still our prime way of playing. So you can see the world and touch all those things.

“It's also a bit more hardcore of a role playing game than we've done. It's got some really great character systems – choosing your background, things like that. We’re going back to some things that we used to do in games long ago that we felt have really let players express the character they want to be. So I think when you see it being played, you would recognise it as something we made.”

Previously Howard has spoken about Starfield being infused with Bethesda Game Studios’ DNA. What does that mean to him, and how has it informed this game specifically?

“Well, we like to put you in a world where we're not dragging you by the nose and saying you must do X, Y and Z, and that it's okay for you to want to test the [game’s boundaries]. You know, can I read this book? Can I pick this up? Can I do this? What if I do this? What if I do this? And the game is saying ‘yes’ a lot.

“And it has large scale goals and storytelling, but that minute-to-minute feels rewarding for you. And if you just want to pass the time and go watch the sunset and pick flowers it's rewarding in that way too. The quiet moments feel really really good.”

There are alien races too – although Howard won’t disclose how they tie in to the game’s realistic grounding (“There is a way we approach it, I will say that”) – and planets to explore. How challenging is it to design an open universe versus an open world? The worlds of the Elder Scrolls and Fallout are large but relatively self-contained. The universe is, by its very nature, infinite.

“Not necessarily…” counters Howard. “I don't want to set any crazy expectations for that. You know, we have cities and we build them like we built the cities we've built before. And we have lots of locations that we're building like we've built before. And we want that experience of you exploring those to be, you know, as rewarding as we've done before.

“There are some different spins on that given the subject matter, but we like that about games. We want to point in a direction and walk and have our curiosity be piqued, and hopefully rewarded.”
