its not elitism; big commercial beer is swill. as someone else said (i think it was Moggy? good guy there) that there's a big space between "1 keg craft ale" and mass produced larger.
what makes it worse is on 'tap' and at events, this shite isnt even cheap! last time i was at Wembley it was like £6 for a pint of Fosters or something :dread: unbelievable!

World Cup sponsorship is doing well, there's been piles of red Budweiser boxes by the entrance of Tesco lately.

Exactly, it's strawberry floating nonsense. Much more to do with mainstream popularity than taste.

I noticed it in Liverpool and Notthingham on pub crawls I couldn't really stick to the same beer in each pub, something you can do easily in Dublin.

Is it true that the Guinness is better?

According to my mates it is, I only drink Guinness in the winter and didn't try it. I presume it's brewed from St James' Gate here tho for England???

Maybe Moggy's right. I love Guinness so intend to find out one day.

I bet the extra child stuff is seen as sacrilege.

I went to Ireland a few years ago and the Guinness tasted exactly the same - not sure if it's changed since then but it was identical.

I noticed the Guinness in the Guinness storehouse tasted nicer than anywhere else but they might have put cocaine in it.....

...I mean Raisins.

If I ever have access to a time machine, the first thing I am going to do is go back to the early days of Coca-Cola and see what it tasted like with proper cocaine in. :datass:

It is the exact same drink as it's all brewed over there. The difference comes with how fresh it is. Guinness being more popular in Ireland means you're less likely to go into a pub where they sell like one pint a day and so have the Guinness sitting around.

This is why I will normally only have a Guinness in places like Walkabout where you know they get through a lot of it.

You go to an Australian pub in England to have a fresh Irish drink?

God bless globalisation.

I went to an Irish Pub in Australia and asked for a pint of Guinness and was horrified that it was poured straight without letting it settle.

Larger is fine, it's just it lacks flavor. I think that's why it's so popular, not because it's bad but because it just bland and inoffensive.

I've never had Hobgoblin, I just remembered seeing the beermats a few years ago.

What drink have you had that needed cutlery btw? That's twice you've mentioned it, are you sure you are not drinking 3 week old milk?

You don't need cutlery to drink Hobgoblin it's the same consistency as any other beer.

Just because ale is referred to as lumpy beer.

I'm only messing though, I'll try anything. I just don't like that some people try to elevate craft beer and the like to the level of fine wines and whiskey (of the beer world).

no one is trying to elevate craft beer to some lofty heights  theres crappy beer and theres amazing beer, regardless of the price.
however all the big larger beers that are popular (Carlsberg, Fosters, Stella, Budweiser, Carling) are genuinely awful and you are a pleb if you drink them.
