Steve Wiebe to Attempt Reclaiming Donkey Kong Crown at E3

Steve Wiebe, the Donkey Kong player made famous in the film The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, will be making another attempt at reclaiming his top score record on June 2. But this time it will be nationally televised, live on G4 from this year's E3. Twin Galaxies, also from the movie, will be at the event to provide both the Donkey Kong arcade unit and to record Wiebe's score.

The 2007 documentary made the soft-spoken Wiebe popular as the proverbial David to Billy Mitchell's Goliath (which is arguably inaccurate). He was the first Donkey Kong player to break a million points in the game, but ultimately he was outscored by Mitchell at the end of the movie. Since then, he's tried four more times to break Mitchell's score but has not yet succeeded. In the most recent try, he hit a million points for the second time recorded in public, but didn't quite match Mitchell's high score. Be sure to check out King of Kong if you haven't already, so you're familiar with the history before you cheer Wiebe in a few months.

I thought Wiebe actually beat the score after the credits on King of Kong? I know Mitchell beat it again since then.

Anyway, I hope he can do it, some of Mitchell's 'tactics in the film we're very underhanded, and he came acroos really badly.

And that little weasel who basically worshipped Billy annoyed me so much. :evil:

Steve Wiebe sets new Donkey Kong Jr. record

Steve Wiebe has set a new Donkey Kong Jr. record, according to Twin Galaxies.

The King of Kong star surpassed Ike Hall’s previous score of 1,033,000 with a massive 1,139,800.

Loads of patience there we reckon.

Attendees at E3 this year can watch Wiebe try for the fourth time to break Billy Mitchell’s Donkey Kong record on June 2. Via Joystiq.

Great news!

It's a good way to go into E3 by taking the DK Jr record now before attempting to beat Billy's DK record in June. Hopefully he can do it as he really does seem like a down to earth and nice guy while Billy Mitchell comes across like Satan himself.
