I don't even like the original version.

I always find covers like this a little weird, likewise how you don't like the original version but like this one. It's literally doing nothing with the song but changing out the vocalist. I can't see how you can like one version but not like not the other. It shows how versitile the original is, if you can replace the vocals and it still works.

For me, with a good cover version, you should be able to listen to them in either order and not be able to tell which is the cover.

The Knife's Heartbeats and Jose Gonzalez stand out for me as immediate examples. I always thought the former was the cover version.

When I was 18 or so and going to nightclubs, The Futurehead's cover of Hounds of Love was pretty popular, and worth a listen.

Likewise, Camera Obscura's version of Abba's Supertrooper is good too. I'm drunk and can't be bothered to link it those two myself so go use the Internet, you lazy bastards.

Completely different lyrics but equally as good as the original.

Changing out the vocalist is half of every cover - and in this case, he obviously has a fantastic vocal range, which he makes great use of (unlike Rihanna in her original version), and brings an entirely new sound to the song, which makes it sound oh so wonderful by comparison to the original. Personally, I love the SPG cover of Diamonds, but the original can suck a strawberry float because it doesn't sound anywhere near as good.

If you have a song, and a cover of a song, and you can't tell which is which, then the cover is bad and without any merit whatsoever, because it's an exact copy. A good cover should be imbued with the sound and style of the covering artist, sound at least as good as the original, but not sound identical because what's the point of that?

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.
