Its odd i didnt really notice the product placement and that is something that usually really bothers me. I think i just thought all the coke chat was just 80s referencing etc

i've become a drone :dread:

The one that actually confused me was
when the mall is being attacked and Eleven says "let's go through the gap", I thought she meant a hole in the wall or a crack that had appeared in the damage but she meant the strawberry floating shop :fp:

None are as bad as this from House of Cards...

You’re not a drone, you’re just not a nitpicky strawberry floater.

I don't think the product placement in this even approaches nitpicky. It was omnipresent.

Also, being an informed and aware consumer in an age of late stage capitalism =/= nitpicky.

New Coke was a huge story in the mid 80s.

They are in a Mall, I’d rather Gap be there than some bullshit made up name.

I didn’t even notice Burger King, I was enjoying the show, not caring about what brand of burger Hopper eats.

I noticed the product placement but it didn’t detract at all from my enjoyment of the season.

The most impressive thing was my Wife recognising a ton of background stuff she knew from her childhood, everything from clothes, signs, toys and wallpaper/furniture. She said everything was spot on.

Is that not the point though? You don't need the brands to enjoy the show? All it serves is conditioning people to buy products and let's people have weird nostalgia boners.

OK, but - and I'm being half serious, half facetious here - if they were a real outlet, and that were a real product, surely you'd have hated that scene, as it would be another example of blatant product placement? And so it's therefore surely fortunate that it isn't a real franchise, otherwise you'd have liked the season considerably less, given its prominence in most episodes?

Yes.

But.. would I rather live in a world where the USS Butterscotch exists and the writers of Strangers Things had truly sold their souls to the capitalist cause, or the one we live in now?

We'll never know.
