I am need of the old GR hivemind:

There is a rat living under the decking in my neighbours garden that L-shapes onto mine (I live near the corner) and it is popping out of a gap in the fence and getting into my black wheelie bin. I tried weighing down the lid with a huge paving slab but it still gets in via a design flaw in the lid of my bin. The council laid down a poison box behind the bin/in front of the rat hole and the last time the guy came to check it all the poison has been eaten. Today was bin day and I saw the little blighter popping out of his hole looking for his morning scraps (implying there might be more than 1... :? )

Now I have finally seen it I am tempted to take matters into my own hands by filling the empty wheelie big with 1' of water and a few nuts and letting it come in and drown itself. My only qualm with this is that I am incredibly squeamish and would need the council to come and dispose of the body, which I assume they would do anyway. If there is more than 1 then this might get all of them at once.

My other plan is to keep the bin around the front of the house and then see if it just eats all the poison as its main food source is gone but I worry this will make it look further afield for food instead, bringing it closer to my house which I don't want.

Can anyone who has delt with this sort of thing in the past offer advice on a solution? Am I better off just letting the poison the council has put down do its job and just leaving the bin near the hole so it doesn't go far?

Get a bucket or a deep mixing bowl, fill it with a bit of oil (I would suggest sesame oil, because it smells nice) and then leave it out overnight. In the morning you will have an oily rat in there that can't escape. Then hit it with a hammer.

inb4 blu tac up the hole

Unfortunately where there is one rat there are probably more. Likely some already died from the poison, the council will have to keep at it.

We had a pest control guy come in last year as we had some holed up in the shed and visiting next door (who left bread out for the birds and wondered why rats would come into their garden, certainly one for the neighbour thread).

They put down a few boxes of poison and caught one in the week (fortunately I was inside when the box was opened), and left the remaining poison (the GOOD stuff) just in case. Never seen a rat around since.

I'd be surprised if the council stuff was any good.

Bring it inside and let it stand on your head and then enjoy your success as the greatest chef of all time!

I don't like the idea of rat poison as it doesn't always kill the rats straight away meaning other animals like cats can end up eating poisoned rats and die themselves (or develop organ failure as my old cat did).

They might seem more cruel and messy but good old mechanical rat traps tend to kill instantly and don't have the potential to poison other wildlife and pets.

Yeah that's a good point, Ironhide, and one of the reasons why I haven't tried to poison the mole that is currently destroying my back garden. Would much rather blunt-trauma the thing than risk just making it and other animals in the vicinity suffer.

Trying to catch it so I can biff it on the noggin' is the real challenge though :x

We had a rat or two in our back garden a while back, this was shortly before we got our current dog and we’ve not seen the rat since, she didn’t kill it but her scent obviously put the rat off sticking around.

They ate our shed. No lie. We had what was left of it pulled down today and are now getting a concrete base put down before having a new shed put up. I had to patch it up with chicken wire, staples and expanding foam. I thought It was a thing of beauty but the wife disagreed.

But i still say befriend them. Failing that take down any bird feeders you have.

OP you a snowflake for real. Get a lethal rat trap from DIY shop. Set it at night. Retrieve the rats body in the morning. Cut off its head and put it on a spike as a warning to the other rats.

See: Animals of Farthing Wood and Redwall have meant that if I had a garden, I’d be leaving the mole treats and letting it destroy whatever it wanted in return for the odd night-time picture.

If I can catch the strawberry floater it is going to either get stabbed with a pitchfork, or have its head stoved in with a big hammer. No mercy :capnscotty:

They can smell their death, and the sound they'll make rattling their cage will serve as a warning to the rest.
