Always on, lots of games are really speech heavy these days so having them on (if available) is nice so I don’t miss anything potentially important to the main story. I’ve got to the point where I always have them on when watching Netflix too, quite often because I have the volume lower and don’t miss any of the dialogue.

Absolutely always on. I hate missing dialogue, even if it's just ambient throwaway lines from NPCs, and that happens more often than I'd like for a lot of the reasons already stated.

Nintendo really should change their approach to accessibility and options.

I'm not sure if this is presumptuous or possibly racist, but given Japan's rather late transition into various progressive movements post-imperialism I do wonder what the general attitude towards disabled people still is over there, it might culturally still be a non-issue or oversight. Just as we have here there are still lots of entertainment industries that don't fully consider accessibility but perhaps there's an increased incidence of even the largest media corporations like Nintendo also going about it in a really weird or just straight up absantee, stupid way like that.

What does make me wonder though, is how businesses don't seem to recognise that including accessibility options literally makes money by diversifying their audience. It's really odd and more generally an ignorance/ableism ingrained in society that you can't really attribute to one person or company and say, "yeah but what about these people you've never met/don't know/ignore on the street/in shops/make weird surprised faces at".

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

I think (and hope!) the vast majority is ignorance. If you aren't aware of various accessibility issues then you won't design for them. The diversifying audience could be a trade-off as to whether increased costs of developing accessible software is offset by the increase in sales it would lead to (although its kind of rubbish if a developer, especially a big one, decides it not worth the investment).

I don't like subtitles on TV but they become necessary when it's late at night and I'm watching a film which still has the sound mixed for cinema (I guess?) so you get really quiet dialogue and REALLY LOUD ACTION.

Subtitles ruin comedy because it's generally so reliant on timing so I guess it's a good thing that you don't really get comedy games

Subtitled comedy can work well enough, if the way the subs have been written is aware of the structure of the comedy then you can still get a decent enough response.

I watched a hell of a lot of comedy shows on a tablet with subtitles on and sound off in the middle of the night whilst bottle feeding all 3 of our kids and it was a surprisingly nice way of doing it!

Obviously the kind of comedy you watch isn't 90% people being interrupted by fart noises

That would be brilliant with subs tbh.

Depends on the game, if I'm not bothered about what's happening I'll have subs on so I can skim read and skip through dialogue. If it's more story heavy like Last of Us or God of War, I normally have them off on the first play through to avoid those split second spoilers.

For me, it’s pretty a must for me due to being totally deaf since birth.

Hate games that jump in without offering you the option to switch them on, or put it off by default. Rockstar is pretty bad for this.

I have to say, simultaneously bottle feeding 3 children while reading subtitles on a tablet is very impressive

Depends on the game really. If it's something I can play whilst the kids are around then on although I dislike it when random NPC chatter is subtitled.

On the other hand if I'm playing a handheld on my lunch break I normally have headphones on so don't bother.

My main problem with them is they're at the bottom of the screen so reading them means missing the action on screen. I wish doing the 'comic book' subtitles Heroes used to use for Hiro and Ando was a mandatory thing.

It's definitely a skill :datass:

But yeah it wasn't all 3 simultaneously, that would have been something truly special

Somehow I get a lot of people asking me how I manage with reading and watching an action heavy scene.

I can watch them both at the same time. It’s just years and years and years of experience.
