Title Suika Game (Watermelon Game)
Publisher Aladdin X
Developer Aladdin X
Format Switch
Release 2021 (Japan), 20 October 2023 (worldwide)

Background

Aladdin X wrote:This is a game where you combine two small fruits to make them larger and create big watermelons.

^ . Yes, this simple game is currently gaining a lot of popularity following a few streamers in Japan highlighting the title. Are you ready to squish fruits together? As long as you turn off the sound (that music track is lousy) it looks to be addictive puzzling action!

This vid gives a good overview of the game and how things work.

My partner has got quite into this game since it came out on the western e-shops last week -- her top score is around 3200. I've had a couple of goes but only got to around 2000.

Apparently the game is really getting popular, site, and it's cool that you guys are enjoying it. I'm sure I noticed Qikz-san playing it, too... the Japanese version, naturally!

There's a browser version of it if anyone wants to give it a go

https://heardleunlimited.io/suika-game

Works on mobile.

It's very fun, the physics add a lot of variance and randomness but it has that satisfaction of something like Tetris where you get a big combo and clear a bunch of space

Great shout, Fade!

I just had a go. I'd thought I was doing really well... but I got 1,454. Way behind site and Mrs site!

I really want to get this on Switch now :shifty: .

It's a fun game! I've been playing it on my phone browser for a couple of days, I think my best score was about 2400. I showed it to my partner and she smashed that on her second go :dread:

The browser/app versions are clones right, not by the same dev as the switch game? But reading wikipedia sounds like the switch game is mostly a clone of an older chinese game anyway.

I've tried out that browser version, it's like those "Tetris with physics" games but with Threes instead. Which also suffered from similar cloning problems!

I spent the first half of this week interrupting conversations both at work and home with random tube stations and now you've gone and shown me this :shifty: :dread:

It's 2048 but with bubble physics. I think I actually played an Android game called Bounce Merge which was similar (but full of ad bloat because Android). If you like this sort of thing I'd recommend Atomas which is a periodic table themed merge game with an interesting ring-based mechanic (no context thread...). It's a really nicely put together game as well, didn't feel like a glorified billboard.

My son just tried the web version of this and loved it so it's definitely going to be on his Switch come Christmas morning :D

I did buy it!

Late last night... in bed... purchased! I loaded it up and played it for an hour straight. So simple but very moreish; I think it's part skill and part luck but it sure is fun.

I'm not great at it - I haven't achieved a watermelon yet! - with my scores up to around 1,750. Gonna get the fruit-squashing going again later, though :-).

I got a watermelon on my second go, by luck rather than design. Haven't seen one since.

BTW if you hadn't noticed it, you can switch the game to a Halloween theme in the main menu (shoulder buttons to toggle I think).

Best score so far: 2300-ish

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.
