Geoff Keighley, of Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards fame, has unveiled the Summer Game Fest, a four-month-long "all-digital consumer celebration" of video games featuring "breaking news, in-game events, and free playable content" from the likes of CD Projekt Red, Sony, Microsoft, Riot Games, Digital Extremes, and Valve.

In place of E3/Gamescom Geoff is setting up the Summer Game Fest, a celebration of games with new reveals, demos and more.

I quite like the idea of an all digital event like this with the news spread out over an extended period.

I don't know. It seems a bit weak to call something an event when it stretches over four months. Seems like "SGF" is just a useful media term to refer to the stuff people are doing independently of E3.

Not sure we need anything to build announcements around really, there's no harm in it I guess but I think it would have been perfectly fine to just let publishers do their own individual things for a change.

Also how many Doritos does this event include?

So 4 months.. well basically it’s just like a usual news cycle then? The only difference being this site will launch the news first?

Basically, publishers are relieved they no longer have their hands tied and can spread their game announcements out over the summer instead of watching them drown amongst the annual CGI wankfest at E3.

And someone has jumped at the chance to brand that which will probably mean all announcements come with the same hashtag, and not much else.

Personally pretty excited to just see how this goes. With so many different events being cancelled, having everything happen in one place over the next 4 months is a great idea.

So it's an "event as a service" then. Seems like the natural progression.

4 months certainly takes away the impact of any announcements. Play your "big" announcements at the start and the rest of the 4 months seem boring. Have them at the end to cap off the summer.. how do you keep people engaged for the 4 month?. Personally a good time would be in the middle, the apex of the event. But saying that "surprise reveals" touted by Keighley are meh to ok at best. With developers and publishers doing their own thing do we really need this? Let alone with leakers and throw in GameStop/Amazon leaking up coming unannounced games before big events too.

I played very little of the Tony Hawk games back in the day so I don't have that nostalgia. Excited to see what they have cooking up for tomorrow tho.

A lot of buzz about Wednesdays reveal. Seems to be multi-platform but not a game. Best guess I've seen is Unreal Engine 5 being revealed or some sort of cross-play intiative.

This actually sounds like something major. If not, a lot of people on Twitter are overreacting.

Unreal 5 seems too early? When did 4 release

Cross play initiative would be great news for everyone.

4.25 released in May.

My guess would be some kind of cross play initiative too.

We've been on Unreal Engine 4 for 6 years now so a new numbered version is definitely not out of the question.

What hype/buzz are people seeing for this then?
