My alarm plays and I'm up and out of bed. Not wanting to use the bathroom after anyone else is plenty enough motivation for me to start my day ASAP.

I look at the time on my alarm clock involuntarily at pretty much half hourly intervals through the night, usually starting at around 4am.

I then mentally calculate how much time I have left before having to get up, becoming increasingly fearful as the clock ticks down.

This is mainly because I want to beat the alarm clock by switching it off before it starts it's obnoxious beeping.

It will have to get up pretty early in the morning to catch me :datass:

I had one of the Phillips Sunrise alarms for years and found it really helped, and now I just do it with Hue lights and routines. I have them alter the temperature of the light during the day too, so in the mornings it's a bright white and then gets warmer and warmer, and even starts to dim them when it's a couple of hours away from bed time. Phillips Hue can be so expensive, but I just bought a bunch of the stuff when buying my house and thought of it as part of that whole expense. They're usually the sort of thing that gets good discounts in Black Friday type deals though.

I think those sunrise alarms look really neat and but always have that small, niggling doubt in the back of my head that tells me it won’t wake me up

As is stands I just use an clock radio alarm, with 2 alarms set 5 minutes apart.

The dark mornings really do make waking up a miserable affair at the moment.

I try to get out for exercise at 6am, so my alarm is set for 5.40. On Monday it went off, and not only was it pitch black, but the rain was lashing against the window. Truly miserable stuff. I think I'd favour the main light bulb slowly lighting up, but then it's still completely dark outside so it'd be a double hit of being pissed off.

Was throwing it down this morning on my commute, lovely weather!

How do these sunrise alarms work in the summer? When there’s a decent chance it’s going to be around sunrise when they’re waking up anyway? Do you set them earlier or just leave them off?

Does anyone have any experience and recommendations? Ideally I want something where I can program each days wakeup time individually.

Also, what's your wakeup routine? Does it work for you?

You do this with hue light bulbs, bonus is they are also normal lights and that well so can be used normally too.

I don't use it but a mate of mine uses his as a going to bed light thing too where over 3 hours or something before he goes to bed they gradually shift like a sunset to sort of gently move into sleep time.

Yeh Hue is pretty good and you can link them to your phone/alexa/etc to do more things with them like sync them to music, movies, games, motion sensors, time/date and you can link as many bulbs as you like to each routine you create so you could just use one of your bedroom lights for a wake up routine but then also include that and other lights in the room to do another function.

I used to use mine year-round, because I'd get up at 6:30, so there wouldn't be many days where it was already fully daylight. Now I'm working from home, I can get up an hour later, but I'm already in the habit of using it every day. Really might as well not set it in July and August though.

And I would never rely on just the light to wake me up. Always use my phone's alarm. The light is more for preparing your brain, through closed eyelids, that it's soon time to wake. You don't get that sudden jolt - alarm goes off > oh Christ > it's still dark > what's going on? > OH strawberry float I'VE GOT TO GET UP.

That classic morning routine feeling  absolutely loathe it

Not that I’m planning on getting one, but setting a secondary noise based alarm would definitely be something I’d do as well.

I just use my phone alarm in the mornings. I know I have to get up because my daughter always forgets to set hers even with reminders. Every school morning without fail I have to wake her

My wake-up routine is an alarm at 0825 then stumble downstairs to power on my work laptop in time to clock in for 0830. To say I’m not looking forward to the return to the office is an understatement.

Alarm at 6:30, one snooze til 6:40 (with a backup 6:45 alarm just in case).

No fancy lamps or simulated sunrises just an obnoxious beeping 6 inches from my head like God intended.

It’s excellent. The half-hour sunset is very relaxing and certainly seems to help me get to sleep. The sunrise is largely pointless during summer, but really starts to help around this time of year, when it’s still dark in the morning.

I set mine so the sunrise peaks 15 minutes before I need to get up, with the (quite unpleasant) beeper switched off, then use my phone alarm as the actual GET UP signal. Because of the sunrise, I’m usually nicely and naturally awake before the phone goes off.

Only downside is that I can’t set the sunrise for different times, but Lumie say this is intentional because you should get up at the same time every day. Also, you can’t use it as a regular lamp to light the room for long, as it automatically switches off after an hour. Probably a good thing, to save the expensive bulb.

Well thats a strawberry float you to shift workers. The world hates us.

My routine?

PAH.

My day shifts start at 0630 so I wake up at 0545.
My night shifts start at 1830 so I wake up whenever the hell, they're normally after day shfits though so I normally end up waking up early. Sometimes I'll have an afternoon nap.

My sleep pattern is truly terrible.

I decided to go for a lumie one, but one that actually let's you set days differently - seems they do one with that functionality now, and it'll be really useful for me. I couldn't justify getting the one with a dab radio however. That gooseberry fool expensive. Should be here at the weekend, and then I'll see how well it works, or if it permanently scars my retinas.

Just leave them off. The natural sunrise has made the alarm redundant until September rolls around.
