Thats Mario running in circles and you can’t stop him. Was never like that on the wii.

Might have to ditch the pro controller and play with the joycons

Is that because you're trying to use the pointer?

It did used to happen on the Wii, not as frequently as it does now but it was there.

I don't think it's anything to do with the joycons. I thought so too at first. They really need to patch it out.

I think it would be a very hard problem to patch out, as I say it was there in the original as well. The movement in Galaxy is trying to do something that is very difficult because of the micro-gravity design of the game and environments.

Traditionally in something like 64, Sunshine or Odyssey your input on the control stick is interpreted based on the relationship between Mario's location and the current camera position - Mario gains velocity in the direction you are pressing relative to the current viewpoint. Because of the way the camera works then even if the input changes or the viewpoint changes the direction that Mario moves in will still feel, for want of a better word "natural". However in Galaxy it has to contend with the fact that Mario isn't running around on a flat plane but often circumnavigating complex geometry where the result expected from the direction you are pushing can change without you doing anything. Case in point being the clips from Rubix above - Mario is running around a disc shaped object, assuming a broadly side-on view pressing right on the control stick should see Mario move right, nice and simple, and that is what happens until he reaches the edge. But once on the edge the gravity effectively flips and so pushing right should keep sending him right, but that is now back in the opposite direction from where he was coming. The game attempts to maintain a balance by implementing some logic that says something along the lines of "if the player input hasn't changed then I will actually continue moving Mario left now that he has flipped" because that makes more sense to the player. But the exact balance between when to stop this "maintained direction" and to flip back to actually moving in the direction you are pressing is a hard point to balance.

Effectively the game is stuck trying to find a point between doing what you want it to and doing what it logically should and invariably it is going to get it wrong some times.

Recalibrate and fire starbits are separate buttons.

Starbits is R trigger, recalibrate is R bumper.

R trigger does recalibrate, as that's the one I use when it goes odd. But obviously doesn't work if the icon is on the screen.

In case you don't know, the 3 colours correspond with speed and difficulty. Just pick green if time isn't important.

I didn't know! I kept picking pink just for the colour. Thanks.

Always pick green. For the race in the tunnel, you can jump over a wall to beat the time easily.

I took on the sand bird level earlier, and it was way easier than the last time I played it on dolphin. Maybe because I just walked over the neck as it turned rather than jump and hover, which seems to mess you up nearly every time.

Yeah you just slowly move around either the neck or tail as it turns. It's the same movement you do in an earlier void level, when you stand on a turning cube as it moves upwards.

Picked this up a couple of weeks ago. I'm currently playing through Galaxy which is reminding me why it is probably my favourite Mario game (along with Galaxy 2). In comparison I'm struggling with 64 & Sunshine - 64 due to the clunky controls and Sunshine for some confusing level/mission design & lack of checkpointing.

I'm done with Sunshine now, can't be arsed to go through and get all of the blue coins. :dread:

Despite some frustrations, particularly with Sunshine, I've very much enjoyed my time with the collection so far. I've decided to pause on Galaxy and save it for Christmas

I did the Gelato Beach watermelon contest this morning, and only popped one once ( :datass: ). I reeeeally struggled with this on the GameCube to the point where a friend did that shine for me, yet this time it was easy. Maybe I just got gud.

Between that and the sand bird, that's 2 out of 3 things I was dreading as low points of the game, out of the way easily.

Have you done pachinko and lilypads yet?
