For that 100-coin star, I made that the first thing I did. If I messed up the wall-jumps then I restarted. I barely had to do any of the rainbow journey as a result, think I was already in the 90s once I hopped on.

This was my tactic here, but also any level which I knew to have a blue coin button.

10 sprites into Sunshine and I still think it’s the worst of the three :dread: trying to get the sprite in the cage and failing horribly :(

Edit, I’m not saying it’s terrible of course as it’s still a good game but the little things like the silly extra step Mario does when he lands just annoy the hell out of me, even more so when you’re moving upwards on narrow (ish) platforms.

They all do, don't they?

Also, seeing as I know you played it recently; do they blue coins in Sunshine's levels count out toward the 100-coin stars?

I don’t believe they do, believe the blue coins are just used to trade for more sprites.

Edit, the platforming levels are doing my head in  can see why I’ve only ever ‘completed’ (as in finished the last boss) just the once.

Great article! I definitely think 64 has the best movement out of this collection, and for its age it's remarkable how fantastic it still feels.

But overall Odyssey beats it for me, it just feels insanely good to move Mario around in that game.

How many Shine Sprites do you need to get to the final boss again in Sunshine? Not that I’m eager to get onto Galaxy or anything.......

deathofcows wrote:Anyway. Do you remember that Twitter thread, about all the small ways they made Madeline's movement in Celeste feel so good? Of course you don't.

Actually yes, yes I do  It's funny because as soon as I read the title I thought "what, even better than Celeste?" and was just waiting for you to get to that in the text of it!

SM64's movement is definitely incredibly good but Odyssey tops it for me. The absolute level-opening freedom of chaining together jumps and cap dives is just so satisfying to pull off.

This, basically

I do think it's a tough call, and as a game overall I prefer Odyssey. That freedom and flexibility and fluidity is great, and the ability to do those long sequences. But Mario to me feels a little light-footed move-per-move, with less heft and grace. I'm not sure anything in Odyssey has the forward-momentum charge of running through a Bowser stage (my fave!), though I agree they do different things.

But I only really noticed all this when replaying 64, and could certainly flip either way depending on the day! I wrote the piece last year when replaying 64, and still high on the power of the jumps and the way the camera accentuates them (when working!) as opposed to the more distant, isometric possibilities of a freely controlled camera in Odyssey (+ the widescreen?...)

Fun to write and think about though, and to see the ensuing conversation. I'm surprised at how many bemoan 64's turning circle which I don't think I'd noticed - partly probably because I played enough when younger to learn to adapt and lean on Side-flips and stuff - who knows?

Anyway! Glad to have both in my gaming life :D

Technically 50 but it will only open once you've done the Shadow Mario shine in each world. It's not done by number of shines.

I'm aiming to pick up all 120 in Sunshine as well. I want to be like Ad and post pictures of 100% on all games.

I didn't even get all the shines in Sunshine on my original playthrough. Think I ended up with 90-odd.

I don't think I even finished Sunshine when I had it on the 'Cube. It just didn't - and doesn't - gel with me.

Is it the constantly sunny, water-beach-vacation-resort setting?

I found it difficult to commit to back in the day, primarily because I like a good breadth of level themes and layouts (i.e. desert, snow, lava, swamp, mountain (and yes I did just think of random Banjo-Kazooie levels)). Sunshine just doesn't offer this.

I think one of the reasons I really iked Sunshine back on Cube is because it had a more focused theme (and therefore a better sense of place) than the standard snow level/lava level/desert level etc.

Going back now there's other, glaring issues for sure, but I never had an issue with the level theme. It also makes it kind of unique among the 3D Marios in that sense which no doubt helps contribute to its black sheep status.

I honestly don't know what it is about the game that puts me off, I can't place it at all.

Dam, was hoping it’d just be a number and nothing extra! I don’t know why as while its an enjoyable game, I just don’t enjoy it as much as the other 2 games in this collection. I really find myself disliking any levels once you have FLUDD taken away from Mario as I just don’t find Mario that fun to control in Sunshine compared to 64 or Galaxy as he just feels really sensitive, too easy to do a side jump and has that annoying habit of taking a half step once you land a jump or stop running (or maybe its just once you’ve landed a jump?).

I love the theme of the game but yeah it does have its issues.

Sunshine has a special place in my heart as it was the first Mario game i owned at release (got my GB, SNES and N64 a few years in to their cycles and never owned a NES). I am a bit aprehensive about going back and playing it now though as it is so heavily criticised. Loved it back then though.
