Totally agree. I think the concept has its pros and cons, but mostly cons for me.

Inferior to other platformers on the system yes, trash no, ahead of its time, quite possibly.

It was definitely ahead of it's time in signalling the direction Rare's output quality was heading in.

In truth I don't mind the Banjo games, they're decent enough even if the second one is too bloated, but it is fun to poke fun at them ;)

Sunshine was so forgettable for me. Apart from Delfino Plaza, I honestly couldn't tell you which level was which, or even name a decent amount of them. They all felt the same to me, which massively affected the charm of the game, and just made it all feel quite 'meh'. For other reasons as well - not just the levels - it's by far my least favourite 3D Mario game.

I really liked Sunshine back in 2002, and mostly enjoyed it again on the Switch collection.

I thought it still looked great and it's the most distinct Mario for me, given that it's got such a unique setting. It's odd to say but I really like the sunny-ness of its visuals, and the colours of the water and sand (think the water textures are still amazing, and the sand also has a grainy, solid feel to it). It does, as Drummy said, feel like a holiday. I also like how you can see the other levels in the background of a stage as you play - it is a bit Dark Souls-y and adds to the feeling that this is an actual place.

The setting, whilst weird for Mario, gives it cohesion too. I get a bit sick of loading up a Mario game and the second world is a desert, the third is snow etc. The levels all manage a bit of variety with the single setting too.

However, I think that while the first half of the game has some excellent levels, the second half doesn't. Pianta Village and Sienna Beach are pretty naff. I've never liked them and could barely remember individual shines in them. The latter especially loses the open, sunny locales for cramped confines that the camera and movement are not suited for. It tries to replicate the SNES ghost houses with its hotel, but to no great effect. The game was clearly either rushed to meet a deadline or front ended with its best stuff. Often the early levels are the ones that get started first and therefore have the most time spent on them (quite a few games do this, as I thought Nuts and Bolts and Yooka Kaylee also had their best stage as their first).

I don't honestly think it's going to sky rocket in value, maybe a sealed copy will go for a bit more, but I don't think a used copy will be worth more than your typical CEX pricing.

He's going to be really annoyed when Nintendo announce that it'll be going on sale again near Christmas.

Going to try and see the credits on Sunshine today :dread: wish me luck  Think I have about 9 or 10 levels required to unlock the final boss.

The FLUDD-less level wasn’t bad in Noki bay at all thank goodness, first level of Pianta Village though :fp:

Is it level 3 in Pianta Village that’s a rubbish one? One with the maze underneath as the topside is covered in fiery lava? No idea where to even go

Edit, Sunshine done (ended with 58 Sprites) :toot:

Now on with Galaxy

I loved replaying Galaxy. And I got all the stars in it again. It's incredibly rare for me to like a game so much that I want to do everything in it.

Where's Mario Galaxy 2 ya bastards!

I really hope they give Galaxy 2 the full HD remaster treatment, Galaxy 1 still looks great but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t have preferred a HD remaster instead. Knowing Nintendo they won’t even release Galaxy 2 though

Still completely unsure when I'll start Galaxy. Perhaps over the summer when I'm less busy.

It's a long time to wait but I found it to be a great game for last Christmas, brought back massive nostalgia feels for Chrimbo '07!

I need OoT, Majora's Mask and The Metroid Prime Trilogy on Switch. I'll officially lose my sh*t if these are announced.

Hated Mario Galaxy on the Wii, LOVE the switch version because the motion controls are largely jettisoned.

Conversely I think my enjoyment was diminished because the motion controls are less well integrated here. I think Galaxy was the one genuinely excellent use of motion on Wii (at least that I played) it worked well, it was reliable and it actually made the experience feel more tactile and helped connect the player to the experience more. On Switch it all just feels a bit clunky, especially anything that uses a pointer

I'm going to choose to believe you played a very strange selection of games on the wii for this claim to stand up

The motion controls are better, the touch controls aren’t the best really as I’ve had it a couple of times where you’re trying to move and aim but it seems to only allow one input on the screen so if any part of my hands been resting on the screen it’s not worked. But, I am loving playing this in handheld, when I play it docked I might have to use my joycons rather than 8Bitdo pad.

Not really, I just found most uses to be either pointless, unreliable or simply poorly thought through.

I didn't play a huge number of Wii games though, it was a but of a token machine for me

Galaxy really is incredible

Just hit 35 stars and loving it just as much as when I originally played it, I doubt I’ll hit 120 stars for now (obviously beat Bowser and see the credits) with all the other stuff that’s on the list to play but definitely will at some point.
