The limited time bullshit forced my hand, and the limited physical print run meant I was going to pick it up on Friday. Galaxy is one of my favourite ever games so I don't mind. I do fancy some 3D Mario.

However, I haven't yet played Odyssey. Do people reckon that's more of a must-purchase?

Whilst I love Odyssey, what I would say is that, if the All Stars pack is as limited as it seems, maybe you should pick that up first and Odyssey later?

My favourite game ever.

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

My second-favourite game ever.

Encouraging shitty practices. :capnscotty: I’m 100% sure that even if this is a time-limited thing, another way of playing these titles will come along. Maybe it’ll actually have the Sunshine tweaks the game needed!

Yeah I don't want to encourage shitty purchases, but the time-limited thing has customers over a barrel and Nintendo know it.

I'd have likely picked up the physical version at an indeterminate point in the future, as I wanna replay the games, have fond memories of them and would like them in portable mode and for posterity.

The fact that the physical version also seems to have limited print run and be in demand already adds to the shitty practices. Odyssey is at least always going to be around (I have been waiting to finish a few big games before getting it).

I think I'd get a better experience with Odyssey purely because it's new, but I was going to get it eventually anyway.

When you consider some of the remake bundles we've had in the last few years like Crash, Spyro, etc. it is a bit gooseberry fool that all we get from Nintendo is these 3 mildly tarted up ports. They are still 3 glorious games no doubt, but it would have been nice to have seen them get the proper remake treatment.

Galaxy doesn't need it and Sunshine looks nice in 16:9 and HD but a remake of Super Mario 64 would have been great. Saying that, I don't think Nintendo would let another studio remake a 3D Mario game so it would have to be the internal team. If the choice is 3 mildly tarted up ports + a new project from the 3D Mario team I'd choose that over remakes for sure.

Sunshine and Galaxy are still lovely looking games no doubt, and gameplay is clearly king when it comes to Mario games anyway, but that's not to say they wouldn't have benefited from a bit of extra attention.

But yeah I'll take a new 3D Mario by preference and if this frees up the team to do that then I'm on board! :toot:

Obviously this is Nintendo though so the team that did Odyssey has probably been redesigning the Nintendo corporate website or giving Miyamoto's car a full service or something like that for the last 3 years!

Yeah, it's pretty disappointing they're not all 16:9, 1080p and 60hz to be honest. That feels like that should have been the minimum.

I guess Bowsers Fury has taken up some of the 3D Mario's team time. I still don't see that being a 3 year project though even if it is extensive.

I've long wanted to see an updated SM64 (well ever since this) but honestly I think comparing them to the Spyro collections etc. misses a few key points. Firstly I feel its somewhat disingenuous to celebrate the legacy and history of 3D Mario by completely remaking these games. By putting together this collection it does manage to represent the development of the series, for all its wonder and warts. Remember how amazing SM64 was? (unless you played Banjo first :shifty: ) Well here is a version that renders that one pointless! Yeah... thats not the way to go about this imo. And like I said I'd love a new smoother more polished version. As long as gay Bowser stays :capnscotty: Heck the last time I played Mario 64 was pretty miserable for me.

Secondly, the Crash and Spyro games were all on PS1. All very much largely the same with extremely limited differences between them. Where as 64, Sunshine, SMG are all on 3 gens of hardware and represent substantial differences between each game. Each game has different moves and mechanics and quirks. Just Fludd alone is probably a bigger change compared to anything in the Crash/Spyro games and that ignores every idea in Galaxy. Rebuilding all that is a lot more work.

Thirdly, lets be honest here. Crash and Spyro were a bit gooseberry fool and those collections proved it. Activision knew it to. They wanted to see if they could use the IPs for future games and releasing the originals was not going to cut it. Nintendo do not have to generate interest for Mario in this way and they (rightly or wrongly) have faith in the original versions of these games.

Now I think the collection could go a little further in the tarting up department but the essence of the collection is sound. The limited digital release is shitty but I dont believe Nintendo are going to leave the money on the table. I expect the games will just end up available individually at a price that makes the original collection look more like a special offer.

I sold my switch as I predominantly used my switch lite for playing (don’t ask me why I had both, but I’m sure I’m not alone!)

This release alone had me trade in my lite and get a regular switch again. I can’t imagine playing Galaxy any other way than with motion controls. The flick of the wrist to blast off to other planets/spin etc is how the game was designed. It wouldn’t feel right to be relegating that to a button. As it wouldn’t if they do the same with Skyward Sword.

Currently two thirds of the way through a second play of Odyssey - sublime. Should finish it in time for Friday and 64 will commence!!

Me too. Actually a little worried as I dont find holding the joy cons as comfy as the Wiimote. It all just feels a bit compromised although its nice they are not tethered.

Odyssey plays pretty much the same and my muscle memory tells me it’s how Galaxy felt on the Wii. I know what you mean, but a stint on Odyssey should prepare you, assuming you’ve got it.

I’m also playing through Odyssey again, just doing a bit every now and then though (currently up to the wooded kingdom) as I’ve said before, 3D All Stars is being saved for Christmas Day so taking my time with Odyssey isn’t an issue, might get more of the post game content done this time too!

I get what you are saying but at the same time the only other time Nintendo have released a compendium of older Mario titles, the only other time they invoked the "All Stars" name we got ... graphically remastered versions of all the games it contained!

If they had pushed these out as Virtual Console titles at £5-£10 each then fair enough, but they are charging the same amount as other companies have for completely rebuilding older titles from the ground up.

But yeah, Crash and Spyro were always gooseberry fool, you'll get no arguments from me there!

Agreed (though SMB2 might be the one I could maybe make a case for being an improvement) but at least they tried!
