It's not too bad overall. I think there's 4 sections to it from memory. The only one that can be a bit unpredictable is the one with the flying lava rock things.

I've got 120 stars on Sunshine and Galaxy. Will get 120 on 64 then get 120 on Galaxy again in the post-game.

I don't think I'm going to try and 120 Sunshine, after the time I've spent with it so far the desire just isn't there to push through. I'll get the credits and then ditch it I think.

The ideas, the ambition, the music - aspects like these are simply fantastic, just as impressive as they were back in the day. But the actual moment to moment experience of moving Mario around these spaces is just straight up weak, especially coming off the back of playing 64. That a game which is nearly twice as old and was doing all of this for the first time should feel so much better than a game from 2007 is just insane.

YUP.

I've loved having all 4 (Odyssey included) readily accessible to work out the differences. But to my tastes 64 is easily (almost objectively) better controlling than Galaxy.

Galaxy is gorgeous and has a lot of pop and spectacle at every turn. But like you say Mario's core gamefeel is stodgy compared with 64.

Specifically, the spin move kills the momentum every time you want to attack. The long-jump actually stops on landing instead of seamlessly blending with running like in 64. The second and triple jump don't have the pop and initial upward acceleration of 64's either. There's also the different weighting of 64, with his exaggerated leans and his start-up acceleration time (compared with the more skittery Sunshine), but that's more personal preference.

I think it's also a matter of camera and animation. 64's second jump has Mario with his chest out and legs together like a stretching gymnast or acrobat. And his triple jump shoots up with his arms out as a flourish (compared with say Odyssey's tuck and Galaxy's slightly odd and unreal timing of its animation), and has that awesome double-swish sound. Both jumps also have a crisp voice sample that starts loud and sharp (see also: long jump) that gives them a sudden-ness and burst different to Galaxy's also.

And though 64's camera is bemoaned (rightly I think!), it also limits you to a mostly horizontal plane of adjustment - left and right. The default camera height is more Mario level than in Galaxy's higher, zoomed out view (see also: Odyssey). Its camera is also more connected to Mario's movements. So when Mario triple jumps in 64 the camera cranes up to keep up, just as it does with the spinning, tree-top dismount where the camera has to arc all the way up to catch it. It looks awesome and dynamic. Galaxy has lots of this stylish camera movement in the spin stars and so on (which look and feel great), but not as much not in the gameplay proper.

I've been making switch videos out of interest to compare - I showed a friend yesterday Odyssey's and after 64 he was like 'yo that looks weak' (though Odyssey is the most precise and reliable controlling of the lot I think). Galaxy's too lacks the almost-motion-captured grace and can't-contain-himself bounce of 64. And the belly-dive-roll-up! I love the belly dive!

Anyway not meant to hate on Galaxy, I know many love it and I appreciate all the polish and generosity in its design and gameplay variety. It is just a different platformer all round, with more considered, concise challenges compared with the hurtling-around freestyling continuity of 64. But it feels worse to me, second by second and metre by metre. (Also: There's so much talking to NPCs and textboxes in each level! ugh let me crack on with it).

Anyway, will play more (never actually played Galaxy properly in the past!) and am really enjoying having them all to hand!

EDIT: Gamefeel wise, I think maybe 64 > Odyssey > Sunshine > Galaxy, though I appreciate others tastes might make them enjoy level design and so on more than pure kinaesthetics. Odyssey's is probably the best to control around its levels. But 64's wins at pure joyful fun-even-in-a-box feel. Sunshine is skittery and jittery and the frame-rate/something looks rubbish in this release, even next to 64. And I don't like lots of the busy bullshit surrounding everything. But it has the belly dive with its spring-release and that sudden TSKCH! of the fludd jetpack is cool and FLUDD also adds fun flexibility.

I reserve the right to change my order after further investigation.

Currently struggling on the last dregs of Sunshine. Trying to find the remaining 30 or so blue coins, and I've got 2 shines left to get otherwise. Been doing it all without a guide, but I'm slowly reaching a wall. It's pretty disappointing since I've been having a blast otherwise. Wish it told you how many blue coins were left in each individual episode. I mean, it doesn't even tell you how many are left in the entire level, but I can at least take a guess there's 30 in each.

Yeah 30 in each (20 in Delfino Plaza I think) and you can look at the map to see the current total. But not knowing which ones are episode specific is a real pain in the ass

Finally got 120 stars in Mario 64! I never did it back in 1997 when it was my gateway drug into gaming, and I never did it when DS came out either. Feels like a big deal to me.

Last star I got was 100 coins on Rainbow Ride and I died on 99 coins TWICE and had to redo the blue coin wall jumps about 16 times over. Worth it in the end though. I love this game and it still holds up, I will fight anyone who says otherwise.

I started sunshine earlier and was having a great time exploring shine 1 of Bianco Hills, even managing to pick up 10 blue coins in the process. However, as soon as I moved on to another act I realised I'd not used the check list I intended to, so I opened that and tried to cross them off from memory. Even with only 10 collected that I'd JUST DONE and WITH A LIST, I still couldn't figure out what I'd missed :fp: I'm going to have to make a point to cross them off as I go from now on, because I've never managed to get them all on the GameCube.

Well done!

I got 120 Stars today and that blue coin wall jumps strawberry floated me over a few times! :fp: so I had to practice a few times with it and when once I managed to get them all then I focused to get the yellow coins.

Cheer, you too! When I practised I would get it 9/10 times but my nerve always went on the proper run

I had some free time this afternoon so went back to Tall, Tall Mountain. It was enjoyable exploring the mountain and managed to get most of the stars without too much trouble.

The 100 coin star led me to look up a guide which made me discover the secret slide and in turn the Mysterious Mountainside star. I had no idea about this hidden secret and don't think that I would have found it without a lot of searching so I didn't mind having to look it up. The slide was definitely the trickiest yet but mate for an enjoyable challenge.

Its not really a secret though is it, its one of the regular 6 stars from the level isnt it?

Anyway up to 114 stars in SM64, im amazed that after all these years I still have so much muscle memory, even levels I had almost completely forgotten about come flooding back as soon as I load up the level for the first time. The only stars left are 100 coin stars then its off to battle bowser for the last time.

I've started playing Sunshine and it's so different than Mario 64. It's so vibrant, colourful and the control is better.

I've done all episodes in Bianco Hills included 100 coins. I know there are blue coins, do I have to collect 30 of them in one episode or are they hiding separately in each episode?

Cheers.

Some are episode specific. It's not a fun experience but using a checklist can help.

I was reminded of one of the other things that pissed me off about the blue coin hunt back in the day - terrible, unreliable collision detection for spraying water. There are so many locations that I know give me a blue coin but dousing them in water gets me nothing because the game is either not registering it or thinks I haven't hit the exact spot that they are interested in. :fp: Just makes an already tedious task even more strawberry floating gooseberry fool.

I don't think I'll bother with the blue coins but I'll try and get all the shines.

Do you get anything nice for finding all the blue coins?

On a similar note, when going for Bianco Hills 100 coins, several times I'd kill something and the coins would spawn and promptly go inside a wall :fp: Easily lost 6 coins this way. Also, why do they disappear some quickly? Splitting those flower things in to a wall and 3 coins appear, giving you about 3 seconds to get them before they go, that's if they've not gone inside a wall.

I'll stick to the shines then

Will still try to get blue coins whenever I see them but I won't bust my balls trying to find every last one.
