Up to shine 6 in Noki Bay in Sunshine. I’m collecting shines in order and progressing along at a steady pace in between work and family commitments. strawberry float me though, by the time I’m into the volcano section I’ll have about 70 stars, maybe less, by my reckoning. The remaining 50 shines must be pure filler. Absolute madness. I’ve been really enjoying it overall but the drop in quality of overall 120 tasks from 64 is madness.

It's the blue coins.

The minimum number of shines to fight the final boss is 50. (The first shine at the airport and the first seven shines in each world.)

It's the blue coins.

I’ve collected ones I’ve come across without actively hunting them all out (because strawberry float that) and I have 80 at the moment. Imagine if there were fewer blue coins and, say, 3 more levels. Could have been one of the best games of the generation.

I think the blue coins work well as a kind of "ooh, how do I get there?!" way of encouraging exploration and teasing the most out of the mechanics, as well as leaning into the playful element of the game by getting the player to try interacting with as much of the game world as possible. But yeah the balancing is off in terms of how much of the overall content is provided by them.

You make a good point there. I think if they were used in moderation they would have made an interesting collectible that hasn’t really been a thing in 3D Marios until Odyssey. Most of the levels are so vibrant and colourful that exploration would have been a joy. Exploring the sea on Gelato Beach was encouraged by the blue coin hunt, for instance. The daft rush from point A to B then B to A can strawberry float off though. I just stopped trying any of those that looked even remotely difficult to save the frustration.

Moved on to Mario Galaxy now. Why the strawberry float can't I use buttons on the main menu? This doesn't fill me with confidence.

Yeah they could have updated the UI to use buttons as well as the pointer, that was definitely a bit of a stupid move.

The pointer movement in Galaxy feels really smooth and satisfying but I understand the frustration in not being able to use the buttons instead.

The motion controls were for the most part fine in Galaxy bar one or two irritating moments.

However, requiring it for a menu with two choices is stupid.

I recently got 100% on Sunshine and I have to say it is one of the most interesting Nintendo games.

It is incredibly flawed and broken in places, it is frustrating in a way that Nintendo games never are. It is very short for a Mario game, has an incredible amount of padding and some bizarre design choices. But despite all of these things, it can be very fun to play.

The game really needed another year in development and it’s such a shame that they didn’t spend any time updating it for this collection, in the way they did for Wind Waker’s HD remaster.

The way the game doesn’t allow you to keep track of your blue coins efficiently really is criminal and the camera is abomination. Both could have been fixed easily if Nintendo had put just a little effort in.

Can't disagree with the fact it's broken in places, has a lot of padding and bizarre design choices but I'm not sure I'd call it short. It's not really that different to either 64 or Galaxy in length is it?

As of last night, I've got all the 'bad' shines done (lillypad, chuckster red coins and so on), So it's just searching for a few hidden shines in about half the levels, then trying to get the remaining blue coins without a guide if I can (I'm up to something like 209 now).

With the bad levels, I've found the ones I remember to be really tough like lillypad and chuckster red coins, pretty easy considering, yet some of the easier ones have proved more difficult this time around.

The blue coins definitely add to its length but not really in a meaningful way.

Mario 64 has 15 levels whereas Sunshine only has 9 and for me, there seemed to be a lack of variety in terms of the look of each level, which didn’t help.

This is as far as I could get before I had to resort to a guide for the coins.

The first coin I looked up was just so stupid, I can't for one minute think how you'd find it without a guide:

If I recollect that’s one of the ones where you actually get a hint from an NPC. I’m not sure it’s a great hint...

Just started on Mario Galaxy and it's glorious! :datass:

I'm playing like I play on Wii and using the two joy-cons separately.
