Started Sunshine earlier.

Must say so far I'm loving it. I've got the 8 eps of Bianco Hills done plus the 100 coins. Also the first in Ricco Harbour. The opening is a bit meh, not helped by the choice to go with fmv which hasnt aged that well. It's a bit too talkly too. But once I got let loose in the hub and then Bianco Hills I had a big smile. BH is such a fab playground to play about with Marios new moveset. It really feels like a big step up from the levels of 64 in complexity and scale and each shine felt far more substantial then most in the opening of 64. I just felt encouraged to look for little secrets and details. The blue coins are going to drive me insane but its a much better balance then Odysseys Moons everywhere policy. I also forget how amazing it was to clear the environment of ink and see it transform. Both the Petey Pirahna and Gooper Bloopa fights are fab. I remember I would just play the Gooper Bloopa fight for fun. Had to stop myself earlier from just messing around in Delfino Plaza.

Given a lot of the comments I'm really surprised by how good this feels to play. It controls fine. It does feel odd in the fluddless sections to be so limited compared to 64 but in the main areas I don't feel like I'm missing things. The only real janky bits (so far) has been occassional moments when I've been clearly spraying graffiti only for it not to wash away. The performance in Delfino Plaza is pretty iffy though. It all looks really good still (the pre rendered bits aside) and some of the effects like the water really holds up well.

I noticed such a huge jump in gameplay and graphics from Mario 64. But I just don’t feel interested in playing, for ages I was stuck with what I was actually supposed to do in the small town area you are in.. :shifty:

A few gooseberry fool bits (and they really are gooseberry fool) aside, i loved my time with sunshine. It's got a really compact level design and exploring is good fun.

Sunshine is like the hot girl who flirts with you under the disco lights and seems great at first but then as the night goes on she starts talking crap, pukes all over your shoes and you have to fork out £20 to send her home in a taxi.

Also she makes you find loads of blue coins for some reason.

I’m guilty for moaning about Sunshine while I played it, but after finishing it with 70-odd Shines I’ve come to appreciate it more in the time since I put it down. The music is still stuck in my head and I definitely enjoyed my time overall with it. But like you said, it’s a tease of a game. I’d love to spend more time with it but I know that clearing the remaining 40+ shines would just be more bother than it’s worth and negatively impact my time with the game overall. SM64, however, felt like it benefited from a 120 star run by comparison.

At least Jawa got out of the forest :slol:

Had another lovely day with Sunshine yesterday. Ricco Harbor is such a fab jungle gym type level and I really like that for the caged shine you can go about it in a number of ways. Certainly helps make it less frustrating when a cloud banana split knocks you off. :x  I adore the Bloopa fight so I dont mind having to do it twice  Blooper surfing is great fun. I've got to go back with Yoshi though and do the 100 coins here. I dont think Gelato Beach is quite as good a level itself but I really like the way the episodes sort of tell a story as you go along. The Wiggler is another good fight. The boss design in this really is a step up on 64. I think the Sand Bird is one those levels people hate isnt it? I love it. Its gorgeous. Wonderful. The watermelon ep is a bit of a fiddle but not that painful. Think I'm just missing one of the secret shines here. God damn those mirrors back in the day :datass: :datass: :datass:

I know the Piantas are not the most popular designs but I do really love how much effort was gone into them reacting to whats happening around them. Helps make each feel a bit more unique and the world alive.

I still think those mirrors look brilliant.

I really should get this started at some point, got that nostalgic itch after playing a bit of Banjo and Conker too so feels right to throw a bit of Super Mario 64 into the mix at some point, too buys playing Pokemon on the Switch currently though!

 :dread: By some distance the worst thing so far.

Had a productive couple of sessions. Clearing out Pinna Park and Noki Bay. I Like PP. But I dont think it quits reaches its potential. Love the Mecha Bowser fight! Epic. PP is a fun backdrop but I cant help but feel it could have done more with the setting. The infamous Ferris wheel I didnt actually find to be that much of an issue this time round. Could tell it needed a bit more work though. Noki Bay I love. Its still pretty damn stunning and the hidden passages and great set of objectives as well as the little story of cleaning the place make it super satisfying. I'm certain this was the level I could never find the blue coin I needed to 100% the game. The boss fight was always an amazing sight. The verticality makes it stand out to. Fab. I think I read someone saying something about a glitch where Mario will stop climbing? It happened to me a couple of times but I think its just you can only hang on for so long. So you rest at holes along the way. Once I started doing that it never happened.

Having an absolute blast playing this again after so long. Some of the more repeatitive shines are a bit of a shame (chasing after shadow Mario) but I still enjoy them. I'll be heading off to the Hotel next. :toot:

The jankiest thing to happen to me so far-

twitter.com/MatthewKing85/status/1330622308164136960

7/8 :x

Anyway! Just got done beating Bowser. Either I'm much better at games now or Corana Mountain wasnt as terrifying as I expected. Took a few goes but once I reached the end I got all the blue coins in one go. Boss fight was cool. Cashed in my blue coins and I'm at 109 shines.

I really liked Sirena Beach. Its got a few irritations, mainly linked to the casino. Having to do that spinning puzzle twice :x but I found it a great change of pace. I loved trying to build a map of it in my head and exploring it. Excellent stuff. Pianta Village is.... a bit meh to end the game on. It's ok. I like the idea of an above and below but neither are that interesting. Some of the episodes are good though. I liked the Chain chomp ones and coming back to do the festival is nice. I do like the day/night. Weirdly it doesnt even really feel like a villiage. The chuckster level wasnt the hellscape I expected but it wasnt great either. I feel like they could have done more with having Shadow Mario take FLUDD away in the worlds to. Would have been more interesting then just chasing him as that was a nice twist. Especially if you had to find other ways of clearing the gloop.

Oh I made the mistake of not killing myself when doing Lily Pad Ride. :dread: What were they thinking? :fp: The level itself really isnt that bad. I've got a couple of secret shines to get and 100 coins in Pianta Village and the Plaza. Then I think thats its apart from blue coins. I'll almost certainly end up needing a guide but I want to see how much I can find myself first.

It's weird, I thought Sunshine was my least favourite 3D Mario, but having spent time with it recently and the other games on the collection, turns out it's my favourite 3D Mario.

40 Stars in Mario Galaxy. It's so damn good and it is why it's one of my fave Mario games. :toot:

I will go back to Sunshine after this.
