Right think I'm at the point where I need to use a guide. Managed to find a number of blue coins but still some to locate. My numbers so far if anyone is interested-
I’ve been playing Mario Galaxy in between Dark Souls and I cannot believe Nintendo signed off on the handheld mode of Galaxy, it’s an abomination. The Boo race was unplayable with the touch screen controls.
Galaxy looks absolutely gorgeous though and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed revisiting it, currently at about 60 stars, I agree with what others said about Mario’s movement feeling sluggish compared to Sunshine and 64 though. He certainly isn’t the freewheeling Mario of old in Galaxy.
Was quite proud of that. Some of the ones were just stupid and I'd probably not found them if I was searching for a year.
Shooting the fish in the market?
I've got them all now. Most of the ones I was missing were talking to NPCs having cleaned them during objectives. Plus a few other episode specific ones. My main ones were in the depths of Noki Bay. Especially as I'd been back to look for any in there. Oh and it turns out I had to do a second crate smashing game. I knew my maths wasnt working. I'm looking forward to playing Galaxy at Christmas but it wont be as fresh an experience as Sunshine was.
Shooting the fish in the market is an example of why the Blue coins are just that little bit too annoying for me. It's not the fact that it's completely random but that it just doesn't register properly a lot of the time. I stood and sprayed all over it for multiple angles without any reaction for a good 5 minutes before it finally decided to cough up the goods!

Same here. I thought that would be a prime area for a blue coin, sprayed it and nothing, then find put there WAS one there, I just didn't stand in the right spot.

Yeah this is what kills it, I love how it encourages exploration and just seeing how stuff in the world reacts to FLUDD but when it doesn't work reliably it's just annoying.

It is and I probably did underrate it a bit too. Although I'm not sure how much of it is down to being so much more familiar with 3D Mario since then. I've found the low points of Sunshine to be relatively painless this time around.

You have to shoot in the gap between baskets I think. Otherwise I'm sure I would have found it without the guide.

I put this down to the heat haze effect probably not being meant to be seen at this high res. Sometimes I felt like it was tricking my eyes into thinking it was screen tearing.

It feels very clumsy and very counter intuitive. There are lots of moments where you need to dodge and move and having to take you finger off the controls to then do something else leads to danger. The spider boss is a perfect example of this. I’ve abandoned playing it in handheld mode now and I’m just using the TV, which is a shame, as Sunshine and 64 were delightful to play in handheld.
Is this version of Sunshine any better than the GC version? I fancy playing it again, and could just get it out but I'll upgrade if there's a reason to.
It sounds like this version may be worse because of some bugs & controls? I also quite fancy finally trying to complete 64, but I think I have the Wii ship version- which I assume is basically the same?
Got the 120 in 64 today (had to look up how to get to Wriggler, and the second slide secret star! Eek!).
It still plays a dream and watching the whole credit sequence in about 5-minutes makes you appreciate how lean and focused it is compared to lots of modern bloat. I love its stripped back purity, compared to even something like Galaxy, say, where it feels like there's a hundred menus to get through (and another pointer-controlled-level select) before you can even jump back into a level.
Also I actually really enjoyed TTC and RR as pure platforming gauntlets, a nice change from the free-roaming elsewhere. And their platforming feels precise and has a stress on precise placement, compared to the more forward-leaning momentum runs of a Bowser stage (which i strawberry floating love).
Also that blue-coin wall-jump section is more genuinely tense and precisely-timed and thrilling than some other whole platformers with their woolier controls!
All in all, I still think 64 probably has my favorite, most graceful game-feel around (of any game?!) What a 3D debut from Nintendo.

I’ve been through all 3 now on the Switch and 64 is still my favourite by far. Sunshine is enjoyable but ultimately flawed and frustrating. Galaxy was as sublime as I remembered it to be although a little on the easy side.
