Ended up putting a list together to track the blue coins.

In terms of the shines I'm done with Ricco Harbour, with the exception of the eighth which requires Yoshi.

The Yoshi one is not as hard as the Internet makes out.

Also, for blue coins, I just used online guides/checklist and it wasn't *that* painful. Noki Bay can be a pain if you're only starting keeping track of them midway through.

Had Nintendo employed a modicum of effort into compiling this series, as well as actually reflected back on the games and thought about what worked and what didn't, and what could be improved for modern tastes, they would have added something that meant you didn't need to go to third party sites to get all the coins.

Absolutely. Something similar to Odyssey's star hints would have been great. Oh and also, a counter so you know how many blue coins you have in each level.

I think I've got 28 in Bianco Hills, just missing the Yoshi ones.

You can tell how many you have - just go on to the Isle Delfino map screen and hover your cursor over the level. Should say how many you've collected so far, but that's all the help you're getting.

This is how far I got before I had to give up and resort to a guide

twitter.com/itsagh/status/1325354798581862400

It was great fun hunting those down, but those final ones were so obtuse that I definitely wouldn't have found a few of them if I'd searched for the next year.

It's annoying - all Nintendo had to do was put a running total of blue coins for each individual act, rather than the level a whole. Where's this last one? Oh it's on shine 3 of that level, I'll concentrate on that one.

Yeah the fact that a fair number of coins are shine specific turns the whole thing from a nice incentive to explore into a slog of trying the same things over and over in each setup of a level. Again this is why I just collected them until it stopped being fun :toot:

I played my copy first time yesterday of Super Mario 64 yesterday. I had the original on N64 so I had reservations about it not getting the widescreen HD upgrade - but when it came on it looked absolutely beautiful! I mean I've seen the Digital Foundry review explaining that it has some improvements but seeing it for myself and the HD characters I was really happy. But trying to get used to the nineties camera controls is another thing altogether...!

226 is impressive! I think I had 216 when I gave up, having found 1 blue coin after an hour of searching. What also didn't help was there were a few I had found, but because I didn't spray just right, I didn't get the blue coin. Even when I knew there was one there, it still took a while to spray the place just right

Update: 51 Shines and 138 blue coins.

All done up to the end of Pinna Park, the balloon coaster game wasn't as hard as I remembered.

Super Mario Sunshine is a lot harder than I remember. Especially those bastard Fludd-less levels.

I used to think I was sick at games as a kid but I'm finding this one a bit easier than I remember, perhaps it's the familiarity. I definitely found SM64 more of a challenge but then again that was my first play through.

Or, perhaps more likely, maybe I wasn't actually all that as a kid. :slol:

70ish Shines and 170 blue coins but I've reached the level I dread... Noki Bay. :dread:

I have actual nightmares of constantly falling from failed attempts to get into the little gaps in the cliff faces.

Onto Pinata Village, a level I have absolutely zero recollection of.

Seems reasonably concise. Interesting that they set some episodes at night, the inferno level provided a lovely contrast to the evening setting. Level rankings have definitely changed from my original play through but I'll post those when I'm done

I still think this is stupid. Not as stupid as omitting SMG2 from 3D All-Stars though.
