When you save a level, notice that the thumbnail shows your currently visible screen when you hit save.

Uploading is the same - whatever is visible when you hit upload will become the thumbnail. That's permanent as far as I can tell, so the best thing to do is save first to "test out" some thumbnails, then hit upload once you've positioned one that works.

I've seen plenty of thumbnails where the area isn't accessible in-level, but has just been made for the thumbnail (pixel art, text, whatever).

If only you could have an antagonistic Yoshi in the game. The end of the level would have been so much sweeter with all the Yoshi you sacrificed to complete it returning to bring you down.

What's the flower that blooms when Mario walks over it?

I love making Multiplayer VS levels - it feels so fun planning out how the catchup mechanics would work so if you die you don't autolose. Will post my new one here shortly :D

It's just a background flower they put a sound/animation effect on

Super Mario World only then :(

Shame that a fun little feature like that is relegated to the ugliest of Mario styles

NSMB is easily the ugliest of the styles IMO. It looks genuinely bad.

It's like the style you would get from an early 00's flash/shockwave animation fan created version of Mario. :dread:

NSMBU is bland

SMW is ugly

It's an important distinction

NSMB is FAR uglier in my opinion. The elements don't seem to go together, the horrible 3D but not really 3D pre-rendered look to it, the terrible colour palette... it's a train-wreck of a look!

SMW is not perfect but has a fair amount of charm I think, whilst still being massively inferior to SMB3.

Not a fan of the "All-Stars" style of SMB1 or 3 either to be fair.

You can do the same with any background element in any style, maybe other styles have similar flowers?

It's not a bespoke object, the course creator just put an animation tile on top of the background where a flower happened to be.

I'm pretty sure you can achieve a similar effect in other styles.

strawberry floating LOL using any style OTHER than SMW.

NSMB and 3D world are offensive to the eyes (NSMB being the worst).

SMW is absolutely gorgeous AND it has the best music & sound effects.

Agree on NSMB looking the worse. The cheap sheen on the characters really sticks out for me. Kinda favour 3DW over it for that reason.

I think you have some of the worst opinions on here.

Well, maybe not, but I wanted to just make a point about how bad this opinion is. Naughty Rakoon

SMB is iconic but technically unimpressive. What it lacks in visual appeal though it makes up for in instant readability. Its simplicity is its strength.

SMB3 is excellent. It retains the simplicity and readability of SMB but also carries its own unique charm. The oft-repeated "revelation" that SMB3 is a theatre set is obvious from its art, where everything is flat, bold and card-like in construction. The origins of Paper Mario's wonderful stylings can probably be pinpointed to SMB3. It has a single vision in design.

SMW is ugly and inconsistent. Some sprites are flat coloured with cartoon-like black outlines, others are pastel and dithered, a distinction that goes well beyond what were probably attempts to achieve more realistic textures with 16-bit graphics. The depth of shading varies from piece to piece, the density of detail differing greatly from sprite to sprite. It's just messy.

NSMB is... bland. Inoffensively bland by design. I don't like it, but I find it hard to hate it because it's just too forgettable.

Surely we can all agree that Yoshi's Island is strawberry floating gorgeous right?
