Ooh! I'd missed this friends play update when catching up with the Direct last night, great news! :toot:

So excited about this now, really looking forward to testing out some course ideas and finding a style that I like!

Oooh. Different coloured warp pipes will spawn items at different rates.

28:00 onwards is where they mention the online play.

Switch smashes on the floor and no strawberry floats were given.

It seems they changed how the SMW goal works. You don't have to break the goal tape, just have to pass through the bars. Sure, that's how it worked originally in SMW, but in SMM1 you had to touch the goal tape.

Not sure how I feel about that.

So where's the cheapest place to pre-order this?

Oooh that's not ideal. I liked being able to use the timing of it to make ending a level tricky - just have one small part of the exit exposed so you can only exit 10% of the time, stuff like that.

Interestingly it looks like GAME is the cheapest for the physical version:

I've gone for the digital version which seems to be cheapest at CD Keys:

If You’re Going To Play Mario Maker 2, You Should Probably Get A Stylus

https://www.kotaku.co.uk/2019/06/19/if-youre-going-to-play-mario-maker-2-you-should-probably-get-a-stylus
Here’s the basic breakdown of controller-based Mario making: Using the analog stick moves a cursor around the gameplay area, which is bordered by icon bars with all the tools you will use. If you want to access those, you just tap the D-pad up, left, or right to snap into those menus. Once you pick the thing you want to do, you shift back to the left analog to place it.

It’s got a bit of a learning curve, but generally it’s a lot less painful than I thought it was going to be. I think the most annoying thing is picking out a new part to place. While you have a sort of bookmarks bar at the top of the screen with recently-used items (which you can optionally pin in place), to get into the whole bag of tricks you have to press Up, scroll over to a magnifying glass with Right, scan through a series of radial menus with the L and R buttons, then use the analog stick to pick the item you want once you find the radial menu that contains it.

Either way, this does not affect me in the slightest, as there was no way I wasn’t going to use the touchscreen for creating courses. I was so sure of this that I even went out and bought a nice capacitive stylus before I even had the review code. I bought this one from Digiroot, mostly because it was “Amazon’s Choice” and not too expensive should I simply need to throw it in the trash.

Fortunately, it worked out quite well. It’s got one of those big mesh pads on one end and a thinner rotating nib on the other. The big mesh pad was precise enough to work accurately inside Mario Maker’s relatively chunky gridlines. And I’m very glad it did, because as near as I can figure, if you want to create levels in Switch’s handheld mode, you must use the touchscreen. Once you snap the Joy-Cons onto the system, the only way to access the icons is via touch. And so if you want to create in handheld mode (which you probably do) and don’t own a capacitive stylus, you’re going to be smearing up the Switch screen with your finger, and it’s going to be gross.

Hmmmm....

It's a bit gooseberry fool but it doesn't change anything for me. I was going to get a stylus anyway.

The versions sold by Official Nintendo Store do, and GAME has a version that does, but it's not really clear if other retailers will include one. I suspect that, if it's not mentioned, it won't include one.

I still haven't pre-ordered this and I don't know whether to go for the convenience of digital or the cheaper cost of physical. I definitely want to get a stylus, though.

I had gone for digital as I was happy to use the buttons to design courses but hearing that handheld mode is touch only has pushed me back towards physical. Hopefully it arrives before launching day :shifty:

If you pre-order Super Mario Maker 2 Limited Edition via Nintendo eShop, you’ll receive a My Nintendo Store code that you can redeem for the Nintendo Switch stylus...

"Selected retail stores" appears to mean Official Nintendo Store and GAME.

Nintendo announce Super Mario Maker 2 will require a new £2000 high end gaming PC, 4K TV and a mansion with at least 10 acres of surrounding land to run
