I only really care about leaderboards with respect to friends anyway rather than "global" ones so that does seem like a fairly ridiculous approach to take.

I've sourced another vid in my search for feedback about the actual building rather than playing; check out Alex's (Nintendo Life) view from just after the seven minute mark.

It seems that the building control scheme *does* alter for TV and handheld mode. The TV mode uses a d-pad/select system which, as I feared, Alex indicates is a bit slow and not very intuitive. He is more positive about the handheld mode as that uses a touchscreen method that I assume is similar to the U version. I'm comfortable with that as I did all my building in handheld mode with the U version. Then again, how easy will it be to hold the Switch with one hand and use a stylus? Hmmn...

I think I am going to pick this up, purely because I had so much fun building with the U version, but I'm starting to feel that I will probably hold off at launch and await reviews and opinions.

Handheld for building, TV for playing other people's levels. That's what I expect to be optimum.

That may turn out to be what I do but I'm keen to try out the controller method of building as I remember wishing that this option was in the Wii U version when building levels there from time to time

jawa, I feel that holding the Switch with one hand will be easier that holding the So U GamePad given the weight difference (if I'm remembering it correctly).

Good shout, Tom - I'm hoping it pans out that way!

I think the Switch *may* be a little tricky to hold single-handed for lengthy periods (i.e. when building)... for all it's detractors (I can hear Ad yelling "Fisher Price design!" ) , the Gamepad was moulded to be easily held / balanced with one hand if needed; still whilst using the hand to manipulate the shoulder buttons whilst your other hand wielded the stylus.

With Switch, I guess we won't know for sure until we try it!

Jawa you can test if you can hold it with a stylus even now, you don't need Mario Maker for that!

I struggle to think why this is the case; the Switch obviously has amiibo capabilities built in and it was great fun in the original game. I fondly recall the themed characters courses that we made in AYAMMM!

I'm feeling a bit grumpy about how Nintendo are handling some aspects of the new version. It remains interesting and I will undoubtedly still get it but... yeah, I'm grumpy about it.

The Amiibo support probably required a surprising amount of work, although they could potentially port most of that work across so it is an interesting feature to cut. I do wonder if licensing issues for some Amiibo were a problem, or maybe they didn't want such a "tempting" feature locked to an older theme when they're pushing the new stuff for the sequel?

It's a shame, it was definitely nice to make themed levels around certain characters!

Yeah, and we have slopes now, so Sonic the Hedgehog levels wouldn't look so blocky.

That is... if slopes are available in the original Super Mario Bros. theme...

Oh, awesome.

Speaking of the original Super Mario Bros., I was playing it on the NES earlier, and the cartridge seems to have given up displaying the start screen correctly. The logo's all green and corrupted, sometimes being randomly constructed all over the screen, and sometimes the bricks all appear black. One time everything had decided to display in various shades of green. The actual game displays itself fine, it's just the start screen that's being ridiculously hilarious.

So I can’t play a Mario level as Shaun the Sheep anymore? I am generally upset about that now....

I'm not really bothered that the amiibo integration has been cut actually. I found the costumes kind of annoying after a while.

Not convinced it’s been cut completely...

I’m expecting a lot of DLC from Nintendo on this.

Yeah maybe but what other Mario game can you play as Shaun the sheep and Hello mother strawberry floating Kitty?

How is this game (or the original at least) if your intention is to be playing other peoples levels 90% of the time, and only designing for the remaining 13%? Does it feel like you are simply not getting the full experience, or is that satisfying in itself?
I know how bad i am with creative software, i will be in to it massively, then just completely drop it.

Going by the previous version, there will certainly be plenty of courses to try out, kaz. I'm at the other end to you (no context thread etc) in that I prefer designing rather than playing but, from my experience of playing through the courses made by other GRcadians, it was great fun.
