Realistically I am never going to go back and play through the Mario titles in order so perhaps I should just accept it and enjoy Odyssey.
I actually feel the same kind of way as you jawa, and tend to do one of three things...
1) Accept was that I’m probably not realistically going to go back and play all the previous games - at least not in a decent timeframe - and just play the new game, enjoying it for what it is and if appropriate perhaps watching a quick recap or similar of the games predecessing it. These tend to be generation-defining games like Zelda and Mario (I wouldn’t watch a recap of these games) and older games that aren’t easily accessible (I did this with the Witcher 3, and do plan on playing at least the Witcher 2).
2) Go back and play the series, or as much of it as possible, so I can go into the current game with knowledge of all the others. This is often with games that I’ve missed out on but have always meant to get around to playing: for example, Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed.
3) Put off playing the games indefinitely, until a time that I can wait until a potential remaster or can be bothered to try pick up the older games and work through them. This usually applies to games that I’m not as fussed about playing immediately, and I probably won’t realistically play all of these.
I used to do 3 quite a lot and so build up an overwhelming backlog (that I’m still working through!) whilst playing games like FIFA, Rocket League and CoD which have no ‘ending’ and are kind of mindless. I do still enjoy playing these though and spend a good portion of my gaming time doing so, but don’t do so at the expense of missing out on truly great games.
I think basically what I’m saying is just go out and play BotW and Odyssey without worrying too much about past iterations, because they look strawberry floating amazing
they aren’t integral to the new games as there’s not a story to catch up on as such, and you can always go back and play Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time in the future. I’ve only ever completed two Zelda games - one being a couple of weeks ago (WW) - and have missed out on loads of the old Mario games.
