PostSuper Mario World vs SMW2: Yoshi's Island

I've always loved Super Mario World, I think it's the pinnacle of 2D Mario game design, and possibly the best 2D platformer ever made. When I got around to playing the sequel to it years later I was extremely disappointed at how different the game was. I didn't realise until recently that it was considered by many to be a better game.

I decided today to give it another try, perhaps I was just looking at it the wrong way when I first played it. So I sat down on a comfy couch, with the game and played the first world of levels. And I still think it's terrible. Yoshi controls awfully compared to Mario in SMW, and the mechanics just aren't as interesting without the power ups of the early Mario games.

But that's me. What do you think?

Super Mario World by far. Although I enjoyed the sequel, it wasn't as pure platforming joy as Mario World. I think the only thing that has come even remotely close is the Wii U version.

SMW is better, but I really enjoyed the sequel. Personally it's a harder choice between SMB3 and SMW.

Yoshi's Island, every single time.

Personally think Yoshi's Island might hold the title for most over-rated game of all time. Its no fun to play, and I don't know anyone in real life who lists it as one of their favourites.

To compare it to SMB3 and SMW I think is silly. However that's my admittedly controversial opinion, each to their own.

SMW is as close as there is, and maybe ever will be, to a perfect game.

I'm another one who played Yoshi's Island later on, and I must agree that the handling of Yoshi was a little off-putting at first. But it's something that can be gotten used to, so it's not a major issue. It looks great, but ultimately SMW is the much better game - bigger, better levels, and more secrets.

SMW is the better game, but Yoshi's Island is by no means terrible. It's definitely one of my favourite games as a child I loved the look, the boss fights, and it has 'Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy'.

Everyone knows that SMW is the far superior game. The real injustice is that they put SMW2 as the tagline for Yoshi's Island. That gooseberry fool does not deserve to be on the same level as SMW.

Yoshi's Island is better, but not by much. I like the physics better. Mario doesn't seem to have much weight to him in SMW.

The world structure is way better in SMW though.

I couldn't get into SMW (or any other 2D Mario platformer for that matter! :o  ) but loved Yoshi's Island. So for me it was a very good thing indeed that it didn't play anything like the first game... which was obviously a relief, but it also felt a bit strange that they chose to label it a sequel to SMW when it was so different.

I prefer SMB3 out if all three because I like the power ups the best, and I also love the clever ways it uses the World Map. It's an absolute timeless classic, it's astonishing how well it still holds up.

Each to their own, but I do say it's my opinion. I honestly have never met anyone who champions the game though. SMB3 and SMW are such perfect games though, so there's no shame in it in my opinion, but I think it does benefit in peoples memories for being basically a consoles swan song.

Now I'm gonna go lick my wounds over that MEGA burn.
