Going home to play now.

G-Force?

They're quite good for doing that.

Enjoy it!

I'm probably gonna get it for Christmas. If not it'll probably be January if I decide to pick it up myself.

EDIT: How's everyone controlling it? Anyone get the GC adapter for it?

ive still got mine for smash 4

Pro for me. I never got the weird fetishising of the GC controllers. They’re alright, neither good nor bad. The Pro’s possibly my favourite normal controller.

"I have been preparing for this moment."
*Looks at PowerA GCN-styled Wireless controller*
"You will lead me to greatness while in tabletop mode."

I'll probably split evenly between that [whether tabletop or docked] and handheld mode so I'll at least be getting used to the Joy-Con for the game as well. One thing I'm highly unlikely to do is swap the attack buttons onto the triggers like I did on the 3DS. I still forgot to use block and grab even with the easier to remember inputs for them [B and Y].

Cool.

I'll probably pick one up at some point, even if I barely use it for Smash it'll be helpful for GC games on Dolphin. :D

Well for the longest time they were the only fully-wired option for Smash (and Nintendo consoles in general Cube onwards), and being fully-wired is nice for the lower latency. The other 'wired' controllers needed to be plugged into Wii remotes, so essentially they were still wireless.

Of course, with the Switch there's now another official fully-wired option in the form of the Pro controller, which I'm sure is more than good enough, but a lot of people who played Smash on the previous consoles are a) much more used to the Gamecube control b) already have Gamecube controllers and c) also probably have the adapter if they played Smash on the Wii U. So staying with the Gamecube controller makes a lot of sense.

As for 'neither good or bad', well I mean, fair enough if you don't like it yourself, but the Gamecube controller is thought of fairly well even outside of Smash circles alongside the 360 controller.

Yes, but... just learn a new controller! It’s not that hard to learn some new button positions, it really isn’t. The latency thing is fair enough if you’re a professional Smasher, and seems like a lot of hassle for the rest of us. I’ve never noticed any obvious latency problems in Smash Wii U.

And I specifically said that I don’t dislike it. It’s fine, it does a job, I don’t get the overfondness but it’s alright. I’ve seen more positive press about the Pro Controller than I ever have about the GC one though, and I really don’t see the hassle with moving onto another controller unless you’ve only ever played games (not Smash, games) using the GC pad.

The exception is if the GC option is a lot cheaper than shelling out for a Pro Controller you don’t have for other reasons, which is fair enough. Otherwise it seems like a lot of clinging to the past for clinging to the past’s sake. But then I don’t enjoy playing retro games either.

Christ, there's a lot in this game. Whole package feels very slick. All I've done is play World of Light, it's pretty massive. Some of the Spirit battles in this are wonderfully creative and really make an admirable attempt at recreating the game it's from. Some are then absolute bastards and it does fall into some the trappings of RPG's, where you simply may not have a high enough number to take on certain foes.

Love it so far though. Feels fantastically smooth and responsive, looking forward to getting some multiplayer in.

Great to here. Do you think the SP is robust enough of you don't have online or friends to play it with locally? Like, would you be able to get 30 hours of enjoyment from it in single player?

Hmmm, 30 is hard to pin down. From looking at the world map I'd say I'm about 40% through (but then there could be more than there appears to be) And I have basically been hammering through it nothing but that for the last 5 hours (food and drink breaks notwithstanding). And then there are more Spirits beyond that in the Spirit Board section, which also makes you go through a corresponding battle to get a shot at unlocking them. Then Classic Mode on top of that, and from what I've seen most characters have got a tailored Classic run this time (not sure if this extends to all however).

So to answer. I don't know if you'll get 30 hours from World of Light. I don't think it will be the case. But factor in the Spirit Board and Classic mode, there is well in excess of 30 hours of SP content. Genuinely wouldn't be surprised if completing all of it (and then there's the Challenge boards on top of that!) will be in excess of 100+ hours. Whether that's content you'll wish to chase is another matter however.

Spoilers regarding Spirits and corresponding battles:

There are 1297 in total
One bastard hard challenge on World of Light is to unlock The Boss from MGS3. The fight is against Zero Suit Samus on a Pikminny stage while a rendition of Snake Eater plays in the background. Absolutely stellar fan service.
The Metal Gear Ray Spirit is obtained by fighting a Giant Metal Greninja at Shadow Moses. Again, top nods.
1080 gets a nod in the Spirits too!

For me the gamecube controller is my favourite controller there's ever been, so it works for me. I'll happily smash on a joycon though if needs be!

Thanks for such a detailed reply. I understand world of light is shorter than the (somewhat arbitrary) number I provided, but it sounds like spirit mode et. al will boost that number significantly. I'm not really a completionist, but if there are a number is fan service things such as those you have given examples of, I think I will find it difficult to resist.
Knowing me, I will probably end up getting online as well, especially if a community develops here.
Thanks again, your post has made me feel pretty hyped up now.

I am getting quite a kick from the amount of references tucked away in the Spirits. So many games are represented, and the battles do offer something akin to the old Event Modes.

I guess that's why I'm finding it hard to resist. As a lifelong Nintendo (and gaming) fan it's very hard to resist all the nods to various franchises. And for me, music is a particularly powerful draw. And this game has a lot of classic theme songs.

There is a method to how many Spirits from each franchise are in this. From what I can see, if the franchise is represented by a playable character, there will be quite a few of them (looks like a decent amount of F-Zero!). If there is no playable character, might just get one in as a token gesture.

In other words, bad news for those that don't like Fire Emblem. :slol:

How’s the Story in World of Light, does it compare to Subspace Emissary in terms of narrative and cutscenes?

Don’t want spoilers, just a sense of whether there’s an actual story here or just a string of themed fights.
