My beginner tips:

Change the controller layout to something you feel comfortable with - I turn off "up on the stick" to jump, as its difficult to do up tilt attacks with it on. You may also like to put "grab" on the left trigger.

I would start with using the right stick to use smash attacks - much easier to flick out smashes in the heat of battle this way.

Tilt attacks are useful to learn. These are when you lightly press a direction and then normal attack. They tend to be very quick, especially for heavy characters, and are great to open your attack with,or interrupt an enemy.

Also dodging is super useful. Hold the shield button and press left or right to dodge in that direction. You are briefly invincible when you do this, and is great for approaching an opponent. A classic opening is to dodge behind an opponent and then use your down smash (which for most characters hits both sides of you) as this can catch an opponent if they're also trying to dodge behind you. Won't always work but it's good to start getting your eye in with this. You can also dodge "down" which will keep you stationary and invincible for a bit. Dodging behind, then dodging down then down smashing can also be effective!

Also don't forget to dodge in the air (shield button) if you see someone jumping up to attack you.

And yeah, other than that, find someone you like and stick with them. I agree that Bowser or DK can be a good start as they're hard to knock out, but kirby can also be good - great recovery, good dodges and he can absorb everyone else's abilities so you get a taster of everyone else!

Immediately swapped grab/shield around and jumping to x/y (although up on the d-pad also jumps even after I set it to the up-taunt*). Tried a bit of Samus and Link to start and I'm leaning more toward Link atm.

* does this mean some characters only have 3 taunts?

Also, are the moves performed on the right stick the same as b smash attacks? Having a bit of trouble telling the difference.

Right stick attacks are the same as your Smash attacks, yes.

Played some World of Light. Got beaten many times. One Ganondorf spirit battle is infuriating, and I only managed it because he used a suicidal move while grabbing me. It's fun, though.

Every. Damn. Time. Installed to the SD card. Installed to the internal memory. Played on a different profile than the one I bought it with. Tried different modes. One time it actually did get to the fight, but crashed one second into it.

This problem is still not resolved. I did a "soft" factory reset (without deleting saves and some other stuff) which had no effect. Next up is the nuclear option: format the SD card and a full factory reset of the Switch (deleting saves and everything). I signed up for the 1 week free online and have backed up all my saves, and I've also backed up my screenshots and videos to my PC.
I'm not hopeful, but it's the last option I have (save for waiting for a patch that may or may not fix the problem).

There's probably something wrong with my Switch, but this is the only game I've ever had any real issue with (aside from the occasional crash in Celeste, but that was a known issue with the game and probably not related to this). If this problem gets worse and starts affecting more games I'll probably buy a new Switch, but I don't know if I'll buy a new Switch just so I can play one game that I was mostly just slightly interested in playing.

Hey, OSC, this is a shame, dude. When you posted earlier I did a search to see if anyone else was experiencing the same problem but I couldn't trace anything at that time. It's odd how it only seems to be this one game that is failing on your machine... perhaps you could try using a different micro SD card, or eject the card and download the game to internal memory? Just to see if either of these options work? Good luck, man.

Yeah, I can't find any reports of anyone having the same issue. I have seen some reports of less severe issues (crashes, but less frequent and usually resolved by just trying again) so hopefully it's a part of widespread enough problem that Nintendo are working on a fix for it.
Already tried the internal memory, same exact thing. Don't have another microSD card lying around to test that, but if it behaves exactly the same on the SD card as on the internal memory I can't see a different SD card changing anything.

Oh well. Only about an hour to go on the latest redownload of the game (following the full factory reset of my Switch). If it's still the same after that I'll try to just forget about it until there's a patch, see if that changes anything.

On top of being rusty in general, it's gonna take a while to re-learn some fundamentals as well as the games newer mechanics. Almost have every fighter unlocked tho. Some of these new challenger battles clappin' me like no business >,>

Got mine yesterday :toot:

I tried playing this in handheld mode but I'm too used to the Gamecube controller. It was a disaster.

This is not clicking with me at the moment, tried WoL mode, Classic Mode with Mario and a couple random Smash battles but it’s not grabbing me so far.

I can also jump in for a bit! Fc is SW-2446-6608-4888

Or you can make a public arena, set it to have a password, then post the ID and PW here!

Online matchmaking is a bit pants right now tbh

How are the mini games in this? Will mainly be playing offline and seeing just how much there is for a single player. Seems more substantial than the wii u version atleast

Thanks for the games guys! I got very lucky with some items for pretty much all my wins - you two are much better than me, haha!

Sucks that it takes you out of the queue for wanting to change your character. Nintendo and online matchmaking user friendliness still don't quite mix.
