GGs Yubes

Looking back at the list of characters I thought I'd be playing/was eager to try, it's pretty different to the characters I'm actually dabbling in at the moment. Playing as Chrom instead of the Marths, which feel a bit like a throwback to Smash 4 when I play them because of their floatiness, and after seeing Peach/Daisy play I am pretty keen to try and learn those characters now. Pokemon Trainer too.

This has been bothering me so much and now I know it's not just me who has been getting poked through shield when it covers.

This game rewards buttons, I hate people being reward for buttons.

Buttons? I imagine if it is a glitch they’ll patch it out pretty quickly.

I’ve finally beaten ten Legends on the Spirit Board! Tough stuff, tough addictive stuff. The Legendary Birds and Ness’ Dad were quality. Now I just need to become a bit better at dealing with the bloody Hands... :x

Buttons is a fighting game term for using attacks, often in a manner where one is overzealous. "Pressing buttons" as it is also known.

Weird that fighting game terminology applies to a party game though.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

But if no-one likes analog jumping then anything you do in Smash Bros is "pressing buttons" :shifty:

Better than being punished for "Buttons" a la Smash 4 Bayo. I've seen a few people upset about this whole "Buttons" thing. I understand why, but the definition of it being overzealous when it actually works means it's not exactly overzealous lol. It's nice to be rewarded for aggressive play again since Melee. I mean, how that Fsmash pokes through Olimar's shield is beyond me though. If they actually added a hurtbox to his antenna then that's dumb.

It's actually worse than that.

Also the issue with buttons comes down to how it affects games in the long run. If buttons are rewarded/punished too hard when they hit/miss then it can cause a game to degenerate to a meta where evasion and "campy" play takes precedence over engagement. People love talking about melee being an aggressive game but when you actually break a high-level melee match down there is a lot of defensive work at play, just enough that players can engage each other often. This is why the innovation of "push blocking" in the Marvel vs Capcom series and anime fighters have allowed those games so much longevity, you can approach defensively as well as offensively, leading to more player engagement.
Compare this to high-level Smash 64 where touch of deaths are so strong that you can get put in an infinite for shielding, leading to a poke-heavy neutral game where the disadvantage state might as well be renamed to the death state.

Final Smashes are unblockable. That tweet is about how a player got hit by a normal f-smash despite his shield covering his entire character.

Yes, there are an even number. I wasted everyone except Guile and Dr Robotnik on my first run through the final game board.

I've never heard the term 'buttons' or 'pressing buttons' they seem to be like I dunno what you do actually do. Now 'button bashing' I get.

It's a dumb term, for sure, but I'm just trying to grasp how the strawberry float you 'overzealously attack' in a game where the object is to kill your opponent

When competitive fighting meets people who just want to tw*t Daisy in the face with a baseball bat...

Thanks Corazon and Pedz! Mass exorcism it is then. Robotnik wasn’t too bad, I just dropped a fat crocodile on him.

Agreed. I think the idea is the whole 'every move should be a long, well thought-out maneuver, studying theory, pain-stakingly grinding out the neutral and playing out footsies until someone gains advantage through big brain plays', but strawberry float that. That's what's so boring about Smash 4 and possibly even Ultimate. It's too much about neutral. Melee has defensive plays sure, but as soon as advantage is achieved it's a spectacle and a thrill to master and player. If I throw out a move in Ultimate, it's generally with the intention of landing it or being in a position where my opponent will move into it as it comes out (defensively), by which point, I'm being overzealous in my attacking, as I don't need to 'button', as they say, but being passive and waiting is just boring to play and to watch imo. That's partly why I play Falcon. I love charging in and being rewarded when I actually land hits and be aggressive such that I can get more hits, maintain advantage, flesh out strings and combos.
