Have you tried... er... beating the top left and top right battles in the final area?

Seven: Sphere amounts seem fixed regardless of Spirit choice. Maybe not for certain battles though? I’ll have to keep a couple of weak ones in my pocket, up until now I’ve been feeding the weaker Spirits into the SP grinder.

Having to do a fair shot of NG+ is bobbins though.

Wait, you get spirits by fighting the bosses separately?

You don’t, but they do register as fights for your completion percentage.

I just beat Classic on Level 9.9! Woo. K. Rool is a beast, but his penultimate fight is pretty tough, and the game scale does NOT like you reaching 9.9. Had two 9.8 runs first.

The state of that Pauline fight :fp: Everything that's wrong with this mode. Challenges just aren't fun if your opponent does nothing but run away. Doesn't help that it's a horrible stage that is *always* zoomed out so you can barely keep track of where you are.

Cheesed it with the staff strategy :toot: Shouldn't have to go and find cheap ways to win these, though.

Ironically I beat that one with Donkey Kong and copious use of meteor smashes. But... yes.

Anyone got any strategies for the 9-volt & 18-volt spirit in that base with all the numbered doors? Hostile Assist Trophies, and those stupid bloody grab-you-and-carry-you-to-your-doom items :slol: The worst.

I made sure to kill the Sheriff first, otherwise he’s an absolute pain in the proverbial.

It's annoying. Try and get to the Galaga items first, and use an assist killer trophy to get the Sheriff out quickly.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks guys! Need to try and find a Trophy Killer, then. It's the only reason I've still got that Sonic fight for the Rayman spirit left on the world map :shifty:

I didn't have one and still attacked the Sheriff. As has been raised already, the Sheriff is a Trophy Killer, but you can sometimes find another one in shops/the Spirit Board.

Was hoping the assist killer spirits would actually just take the stupid bullshit trophies out of the match entirely, but no. I've still got to try and struggle with them and Incinertwat and the stupid grabby items.

strawberry floating horrid. World of Light is a mess. There's no middle ground with these fights - It's either bish-bash two hits and you've won or it's seventeen retries, four broken controllers and a lucky strawberry floating enemy suicide victory.

It just isn't fun. Such a disappointment :( The fact that there's so many damn spirits means that actually finding the one you want takes way longer than it should do. The filter system is rubbish.

Will try it again in the morning, but it can strawberry float off for now.

EDIT: Finally beat Sonic to get that Rayman spirit, at least, so it isn't all bad.

EDIT 2: DID IT :msgreen: Finally

It's not a mess at all. Some fights are difficult but it's a very fun, interesting mode. If you're not enjoying the game, which it really seems like you're not - why are you still playing?

Like I said a few days ago, I'm playing it because I'm saving the classic mode because it's co-op. And I'm trying to breeze through it for the unlockables, really. The fact that there's a bunch of challenges for completing World of Light means I may as well keep playing.

I'm not sure how it's interesting, either. Give me a bit more game trivia (and a bit of variety in the levels! Throwing a couple of platforming stages in wouldn't have gone amiss) and it'd be slightly more than the challenge-battle mode that it is. I'm not feeling the joy that some people seem to from seeing drawn areas from games I recognise on the map.

I didn't mean WoL, I meant the game as a whole. The reason I ask is because it seems like every time I open the thread there's something else wrong about the game or you're annoyed by some other apparent design flaw and I'm wondering why anyone would stick with something that's bringing them that much resentment for as long as you have with Ultimate.

It is an interesting mode, because you can see the thought that's gone in to a lot of the challenges to give them relevance to the individual spirit that you're trying to win. Fights like The Boss were difficult for me, but I appreciated the effort that went in to actually creating them and relating them back to their individual series'. There's a reasonably varied(and pretty) game world, and I actually found almost all of the challenges to be fun. The only ones that caused me anything coming close to frustration were Pauline, 9volt/18 volt and The Boss and they cost me maybe 45 minutes of my time overall.

EDIT: I do agree that Trophies were better than Spirits, but I really haven't had the problems you seem to be having.

Nah, I'm enjoying the game itself. It's Smash Bros, it's a fun (if slightly annoying at times) party game. Classic mode is fun in co-op, but the spirits and the adventure mode just don't seem anywhere near as good as they should be or that people seem to be saying they are. I never really got on with the Subspace Emissary in the Wii game but you could see how much work they poured into that story mode.

Like I've said before, there's some utterly awful design decisions in this, but the core gameplay is still banging.

Not game of the forever, but a good Smash Bros.

It's a funny one, Ultimate. It's obviously the best Smash viewed on its own merits, and therefore a blinding game; but as the next evolution in the series, there are a lot of areas where the advance isn't as great as one might hope.

  • Fewest number of new characters for an instalment of the franchise, whether or not you include clones, at least at this point prior to DLC.
  • Fewest number of new stages by far for an instalment of the franchise, unlikely to change (except for the 'by far' bit) following DLC.
  • Number of bonus modes whittled down appreciably.
  • Granted, that's because there's a massive great one-player mode, but it's definitely lacking in the character and variety that the SSE had.
  • Related to the above, Trophies >> Stickers. For a game that's all about fanservice to fob us off with not even a two-line description is a bit much.
Classic Mode's the best it's ever been, the bonus games were never that brilliant anyway, and at least it has a story mode; and if you're the sort of person who gets a thrill out of seeing Snake and Pichu return, along with Saffron City, you'll be delighted. To have such a full-featured Smash on the go can't be understated either. But it's not the massive step forward that you might hope for from a game calling itself 'Ultimate'.

Were I scoring it, I'd give it 10/10 as a standalone game, but only 8/10 as an evolution of the series. I feel bad for Sakurai in saying that, but not too bad because he'd have to poke his head out of his swimming pool filled with cash to see my stroppy comments.

Also my online doesn't really work. :( Meaning finishing the Challenge Board is a struggle.

There aren't as many newcomers, but they brought back some cut veterans, some having a lot of new moves, etc. Regardless, I think Sakurai was pretty clear in what Ultimate was meant to be; essentially a culmination of all the Smashs thus far. It's meant to be the definitive way to play Smash, an existing thing, not necessarily an 'evolution' of the series.

Did they ever explain why you can't record replays normally in this? The only replays you can actually save are just general Smash battles, not the classic mode or the world of light? I can't imagine they'd be that worried about spoilers considering they announced the entire roster weeks before the game released :shifty:

Keep getting dodgy wins and I can't save them to see what actually happened! Had a fight against a giant jigglypuff and I hit it *once* and it shot up into the sky to it's death
