In an effort to address my Seasonal Affective Disorder through the winter, I've bought a light box and been doing some top-line research into supplements and vitamins.

For a long time, I've been a sceptic about the potential benefits to supplements. The informed scientific consensus seems to be that a normal, balanced diet should provide sufficient vitamins and minerals, and supplements should only be necessary if you have a specific medical condition or restricted diet. Most agree that you're paying for expensive pee, and there's actual harm that can be done if you take the toxic level doses of vitamins found in some multivitamin tablets.

I'm an omnivore who tries to do at least two weeks a month on a vegetarian diet, so I'm not really lacking. However, as I'm now working entirely from home, I'm worried about Vitamin D among others as we head into the winter.

I'd be interested to hear from the community:

Do you take any supplements?

What do you take them for?

Do you feel like they make a significant difference?

I take multivitamins with fish oil. Primarily for vitamin D, but figured anything I don't absorb I'll just piss out anyway so no harm done. I eat a decent amount of veg/salad during the week, but I can't even be arsed to count my calories let alone if I'm meeting my nutrition requirements so just go with the 'nuke it from orbit' approach and hope for the best.

From what I understand Vitamin D is the one that there is a general scientific consensus on people being often deficient in and where you will benefit from supplements, especially if you work indoors and generally in winter at high latitudes.

Multivitamins as I have a fairly limited diet (I find it difficult chewing and swallowing a lot of foods) and Vitamin D as I rarely go outside.

Used to take cod liver oil but I eat a fair amount of oily fish anyway so probably get enough omega 3.

A multivitamin, every other day usually. Currently Centrum, though I’m not happy with it. Not a cheap brand and yet loaded with junk ingredients. Might try Wellman or just go back to a supermarket own brand.

Same here. Also added in another Vitamin D tablet since I almost certainly don't get enough sunlight the natural way. Both parents have osteoporosis, I didn't even think men could get that so I'm double dosing.

And I take Creatine too because it's so cheap and so effective.

Multivitamin with a vitamin B complex tablet. Would be keen to add a vitamin D now we're basically in winter. If I ever feel a cold coming on I add zinc and that seems to put paid to it before I get properly ill.

I use fizzy multivitamin soluble capsules, figured it would help after the battering I've taken this year.

Nothing here, my diet is fairly well balanced and between dog walks, kids and exercise I get enough sunlight to not worry about that side of things either.

I've got slightly dodgy knees and used to take cod liver oil as someone told me it would help with that but I stopped it years ago as it seemed to be more of a placebo than anything genuinely helpful

I've started taking vitamin d as I suffer from seasonal affective disorder too. I had a light box but didn't find it much help as it was huge and I just couldn't find a decent way to set it up where I could sit by it comfortably.

I've got some vitamin B high strength coming today as I need to try and improve my energy levels. My brother swears by vitamin B, but I tried it before and didn't really get much luck. Vitamin B in particular I find really confusing as I'm never really sure which one is best to take. What's the difference between Vit B complex for example, or Vit B12?

I've been a bit of a loser and ordered Ring Fit as I'm hoping to use it a lot over winter, try and get a little bit fitter, bring up my energy levels and try to get my sleep pattern to something a little more normal.

Sounds like we have a similar attitude and circumstance. Also trying to motivate myself to return to Ring Fit. And I think B12 is in B Complex? But have no clear understanding of how it theoretically impacts energy levels?

It’s loaded with artificial bulking and anti-caking agents (including talc), fake colourants like E171 (titanium dioxide) and E133 (“Brilliant Blue”), gelatine and vegetable oils like palm. The vitamin and mineral content in some cases is also considerably less than a supermarket own brand.

With respect to supplements, you should get hold of a copy of Medical Medium by Anthony William.

This is the only author that gives you the real info.

- Use Pure Bio supplements (as they have pure ingredients, no harmful fillers);
- Ditch the concentrated oils (extremely bad)
- Zinc is the main supplement we need.

It's the definitive authority on food and supplements.

I was looking to get some different supplements as I typically just take a multivitamin. I got some vitamin D tablets as I live in Hamburg, and it's starting to get to the gloomy season. It's quite overwhelming going into health stores though, as the walls are full of the same stuff but different brands and combinations. No idea what's actually worth getting. I have a good diet, but am sure I'm missing out on some of the good stuff.

Stalk of the town: the shaky science behind the 'global celery movement'
Anthony William, who calls himself the Medical Medium, preaches the juice’s ‘healing powers’ as sales of the vegetable jump 400% – despite having no medical training.

Anthony William is the Jesus Christ of celery. Legend has it that at the tender age of four, William realized he was gifted with the ability to “read” people’s medical conditions and help them overcome disease. As he grew older and even wiser, William started preaching the healing powers of celery juice – specifically, the healing powers of chugging 16oz of straight celery juice on an empty stomach daily

...

Like all good snake oil salesmen, he also employs sciencey-sounding but completely nonsensical claims. William has said that celery contains “an undiscovered subgroup of sodium that I call cluster salts” that prevent “gut rot”. Numerous nutritionists and dietitians have rolled their eyes heavily at this.

...

And some of his other advice arguably is dangerous. Dr Jen Gunter, for example, has called his views on thyroid cancer “fact-deficient fearmongering … that could dissuade women and men from getting what could be life-saving genetic testing. This is the kind of goopshit that makes it harder for doctors to care for patients and can actually kill people.”

Hmm, I think I'll take this advice with a pinch of salt thanks.

"It's the definitive authority on food and supplements." - Anthony William, no doubt

You've gone off the deep end if you think any one book/author is the only one to give you the "real" info. There won't be one-size-fits-all when it comes to supplements as these things vary on an individual level with physiology, health conditions, lifestyle, diet, and even where in the world you live. A fraudster with no medical training or scientific literacy preaching pseudoscience certainly won't have the answers.

From his wiki:

On William's radio shows he allows fans to call in and describe their symptoms. He performs "scans" with his angel guide, and then offers advice to the caller, suggesting things like eliminating certain food groups, taking vitamin B12, or doing a celery juice cleanse. Jarry argues that this does constitute "practicing medicine" based on the aforementioned definition.[1]

Jarry also describes the case of a woman who, six months after being "scanned" by Anthony William on a TV program and found to be completely healthy by "Spirit", was diagnosed with a serious blood disease that William and Spirit were not able to detect.[1]
