Both my left and right joy cons developed dodgy analogue sticks so I sent them off for repair, I got an email back quoting £29 to repair them (the email is automated and worryingly only mentions the left joy con so I have to confirm that anyway).

I already have replacements I bought second hand for £30 each, and a new pair of joy cons retails for £70. It'd be nice to have my original greys back and to have a spare pair for multiplayer, but £29 seems kind of steep?

CEX's website quotes they'll pay £17 cash for the right joy con and £22 for the left. Other than the sticks drifting out they work perfectly so I don't know if this would get past CEX testing. If I did get that trade-in, that'd be £39 towards a brand new pair i.e. a brand new pair would cost me £31. If I'm likely to get the trade-in that seems like a good deal (and do CEX require you to sign up to be able to cash out also? I remember something dumb like this).

What would people suggest I do?

Trade them I would. I doubt CEX will notice the drifting. Their testing isn't exactly thorough.

I opened mine up and repaired it after my son somehow yanked the left joycon completely off the rail. There were ribbon cables everywhere! Needed to buy a tri-head screwdriver, but works fine... except that it’s now developed the analogue drift you speak of.

The first from my local independent, and the second from CEX (they went faulty at different times so I replaced them individually). It might have been £32 from CEX, but it certainly wasn't the £38 they currently quote on their website. No idea if that is an in-store difference or if it means prices have changed since then.

Weirdly they have identified the drifting problem for me as "Operating system problem".

I'd cut my losses and trade in, then see if there are any Black Friday deals on them. Those yellow ones were on at £55 recently, which makes the trade-in maths even more appealing.

Or, if you were considering getting Mario Party bundle, you could that bundle for £90.

eBay has 10% off which would cover it? Buy new there and trade in the old ones.

How strawberry floating attached do they think you are to your JoyCons?

Ah man, my left joycon's SR button and lights no longer work, it's fine otherwise but still would like it fixed...but being a launch day Switch I'm out of warranty by this point, don't know if I want to pay £29 just so it can be used horizontally...

Yeah, got my Switch on launch, of course the first controller started playing up about one year and one month in (I just didn't do anything about getting a repair until both broke)

Same issue with me, it’s a nightmare. I ended up just buying that wee 8bitdo adapter and now I use my PS4 or WiiU controller with it instead.

Surely given how widespread this issue is, Nintendo need to take some responsibility. Did Microsoft not get their arsed kicked due to the RROD issue?

One of my joycon's analogue sticks won't click-press. They're under a year old, but I bought them in Australia and don't have the receipt. Thanks to your post, I won't bother sending back, as I'm not paying £29.

Seems their joy-cons have a lot of issues. I've already had one of my original ones off for repair.

Reading the replies would it be safe to presume Nintendo Joycons' build quality are a load of old gooseberry fool then?

They certainly have a good share of problems, but hey they don't /feel/ cheap

My hope is that the main problems were with the initial run and they've improved/are improving over time.

I got my Switch a couple of months ago and had to return a joycon due to the drift issue so they're still not perfect

Reminds me of when I dropped my DS Lite and broke the hinge (everthing else was fine) on the screen . I contacted Nintendo to see how much it would cost to repair and they quoted me £70.

Ended up buying a new one for £90 instead as it was more convenient.

Hey, haven't been here in a while. Sorry to hear about your Joycon, I've had a similar thing with my left one. The analogue stick is slow to respond when moving up almost as if it's jammed, tried brushing around it gently but it hasn't really done much. I'd considered sending it off for repairs but by the sounds of things that'll be more money than it's worth, they still work enough for most things and I was thinking of getting a second pair soon anyways so that's probably the right move, cheers for sharing the info.

Its gooseberry fool they even need a repair this soon!

What did you decide to do in the end, mate,?

I'll email them back and tell them to shove the cons up their own arse and hope they en-joy it.
