Switch Lite | A party in your (cargo) pocket

There’s a new Switch on the way, and it’s a whole lot smaller. Today Nintendo revealed the Switch Lite, designed as a less expensive alternative to the original tablet / console hybrid. It comes in at $199 — $100 less than the base unit — and for that price you get a streamlined version of the Switch, but also a few caveats. The Switch Lite is designed explicitly as a handheld: you can’t connect it to your TV, and the Joy-Con controllers are built right in. “The two systems will complement each other and co-exist in the marketplace,” Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser tells The Verge.

Whats with their adverts? I'm sure one of the people on a skateboard was about 50. I guess they are trying to blur the perception of age demographics but even i think its embarrassing.

It really does. I thought this was the couch co op party machine?
All these geriatrics grinding bmx's on rooftops only to find they cant plug it in to their 23" Beko CRT are gonna be pissed.

Wonder if they'll patch some games to support controllers other than joycons or if there's just going to be some games that the Switch Lite will never play?

What did people expect exactly? The Switch with the exact same features but slightly smaller?
They have a clear market in mind here, with the 3DS phased out now, and that's what they're aiming for.

The Switch Lite can play all games that support handheld mode, although Nintendo notes that some games "will have restrictions".
The above is taken from the NintendoLife article, any thoughts on what that means? Are there games that specifically require the TV? I guess Mario Party will be completely unplayable on this.

Probably worth it for the d-pad - but I'm already getting a Hori left joy-con for that, which is a cheaper solution! Surprised it doesn't have TV output but otherwise seems pretty much as expected.

All joking aside it'll do well. The price point is nice and it'll fill that old 3DS slot nicely.
Removing the TV-Output does seem really odd to me though. It's what the Switch was named for after-all.
Anyway, this was never what I was interested in. It's the Switch-Pro I'm waiting for. I hope Nintendo realise that there is a market for them to make something with a bit more grunt that can take games from PS4/XB1 without having to downgrade them as significantly. I'd pay a premium for a version with improved performance, increased storage and battery life.

Arms is completely playable on a normal controller.
I imagine not being able to use the detached joy con method may be an example of a "restriction" Nintendo is talking about.

Yeah, the Wall Street Journal has been talking about two new versions for awhile.
I reckon we might see a "Pro" version of the Switch next September (because Nintendo always seems to release hardware revisions in September) in preparation for the next console generation.

So it is. I never used that myself so I forgot about it.
Can't imagine playing it without the motion controls to be fair. They were great fun in it.

Next September seems like an odd time, especially as it would likely be going up against the launches of PS5 and Scarlet which will be expensive enough as it is. Then in comes the Switch-Pro for the same price (Assuming around £300-£400, but potentially less power than the PS4?
For me it has to be before then, otherwise they're waiting even longer for it.
But would they release two revisions of the hardware, relatively quickly?

I think that would be a huge mistake.
I would have bought a Switch Pro if it had been announced for a 2019 release but I'm not buying 3 new consoles in 2020 and I have a feeling many others will be in the same boat of only having enough for a single new hardware unit in a year.
